READ THE LABEL!

Boursin has always been a favourite in our family, and it appears regularly on the cheese-board.

I bought this packet on Saturday, and was expecting my usual hit of Garlic and Herbs.

However, something didn't taste right, and I remarked about it to Lady M.

It was only then that she pointed-out that it was 'PLANT BASED', and not proper cream-cheese at all. I hadn't read the label and had grabbed the wrong pack. I had no idea that they even made such a product. It really wasn't pleasant; only vegans would eat this.

So, what to do? I crushed a bit more Garlic into it, and added a pinch of Salt and Pepper, and gave it a good mix. It was considerably better, but that's all.

Next time I shall read the label. Be warned!

  1. I've been caught like that with a play on Greek 'styled' yoghurt. Strictly speaking it isn't Grrek if made in NZ but it could be Greek-styled (and then some manufacturers dont even make a cultured yoghurt, just some vile sort of thickened dairy dessert - YUCK). You would think that Boursin wouldn't want to risk harm to their brand by marketing something so different under the same name - instead come up with a new brand for the new-age product.

    1. Absolutely, their good name could be ruined if more (like me) mistook it for the real thing. Why not change the pack to a different colour, not keep it the same. It's just plain silly, although I do accept some of the blame.

  2. It's very easy to pick up the wrong thing when the packaging is so similar. What a waste of space. Vegan cheese! Vegans don't eat cheese. All those faux foods are terrible. Full of weird ingredients.

    1. This one tasted weird, and I knew at once that something wasn't right. Why vegans would eat such things, instead of a perfectly natural product, is a mystery.

  3. I make a point of reading the ingredients on everything I buy. Some innocent seeming foods can be packed with nasties.

    1. I'm afraid I'm very careless, hence this purchase. I shall have to be more careful.

  4. Our youngest grandchildren are dairy free, so plant based cheese is kept in, BUT it is horrible, as is dairy free chocolate.

    1. This really wasn't nice, but the added Garlic and salt did help a bit.

  5. How wonderful that "Boursin" are producing a non-dairy alternative. It could never be "the same" but full marks to them for getting close.

    1. Not close enough frankly! I wouldn't recommend to it anyone. But at least they're catering for those who don't wish to eat 'dairy'.

  6. I have read about plant based cheese.... made using soya milk in the main.... an artificial product for trendy bandwagon followers....
I feel so sorry for people who are medically forced to eat such things.
I bought our "emergency milk" the other day... six 500ml bottles of semi and the same of full milk.... the semi was lactose free... only noticed it as I put the bottles on the shelf here... need to make some real English Bird's custard, so I will try some and report back.
Because of her Parkinson's, my wife used a lot of soy milk with added vitamin D.... I have tried it.... all I can taste is raw beans.... it is foul! Can be used in cooking, tho'.... but, on cereal... I'd rather eat my cornflakes "dry" with some maple syrup poured over....

    1. I buy multi packs of Délisse demi-écrémé milk, but I always check the labels as the choice seems excessive. They must be selling strange alternatives!

  7. I must admit to avoiding vegan items - they seem to contain weird ingredients. I once tried vegan burgers which were revolting to put it kindly! Having survived on "traditional" foods for my entire life, I have an expectation of how something is going to taste and am not really interested in food trends. I'll leave that to others.

    1. I once had some Vegan 'Chorizo Style' sausages (that I was given). They were so bad that I gave them 0/10 in my review. I think they were made from Pea Protein; whatever that is!

  8. The other day you tell me you don't look at prices when food shopping (are you joking?), now you don't read what it says on the packaging. Don't you read ingredient lists, the small print, either?

I am afraid carelessness will not go unpunished. At least you tried to make the best of a bad job.

And, surely, nowadays we all know that there are "Ersatz" versions to the original thing. Waitrose and M&S help you along by keeping real food separate from plant food.

Take your time in future - and your reading glasses :)

  10. What an abomination, it should not be sold where real cheese is sold.

    1. Quite right. It was amongst all the proper cheeses, so my mistake could almost be forgiven.

    1. I'll have a look tomorrow. I shall certainly buy some ordinary Boursin just to take the awful taste away of the last lot.

  12. There are many tasteless food alternatives these days and they often sit with the traditional food products. It is easy to quickly grab the wrong thing.

    1. The problem here was that I know the packet so well that I didn't bother to read it, other than the words 'Garlic and Herbs' (there are other flavours). Tomorrow I shall read everything!

  13. I've been vegan for 8 years and admit that it's difficult to find a nice cheese. Violife do some that give a welcome tang to dishes, but nothing I would put on toast or in a sandwich.

    1. Having just tasted this Boursin, I can believe you. They couldn't even get the taste of the Garlic and Herbs right.

  14. I've been vegetarian for about 50 years ( 9 years a vegan) but I don't like most of the processed vegan food these days - It just tastes "wrong" - flis x

    1. That could be because it's a land-line service (BT), rather than satellite. I don't know. I don't think it's a problem, lots of things say 'not secure' these days.
