'The Caxton' is my local. It is a leisurely 200 metre walk away from my front door.
Its interior is exactly what a small Pub' should be like. Scrubbed Pine tables, an assortment of old Pine chairs, an open fire, a creaky wooden floor, attractive barmaids, and a few well-behaved dogs lying by their owners feet. There are plenty of books on the shelves, and a large pile of boxed 'games' for clients to amuse themselves with. The beer is pretty good too.
On Sundays they add a few 'specials' to their usual daily menu. Traditional roasts abound. As with so many Pubs these days, good food is as important as good beer for their long-term financial survival. I plumped for a huge slab of slow roasted Belly Pork, with numerous trimmings.
Last Sunday we went out into the Sussex countryside for our Sunday Lunch, this week we stayed closer to home. Both meals were excellent, and both were surprisingly similar. We shall go again.
I could get used to this!

Why does your blog always make me feel hungry???
Probably because I feel hungry when writing it.
You are very lucky to still have traditional pub food. Everywhere seems to be going over to those huge burger meals. Even a fish and chip shop near me has just been taken over and is now called Burger and Fries. Our best chippy has been run by the same Greek family for about thirty five years. Its always busy. They deliver too, which is handy sometimes.
I imagine that "The Caxton" would also require attractive barmen to appeal to gay blokes.
There are plenty of Pubs in town that do really excellent food. It's become as important as the beer in recent years.
Brighton's gay community tend to go to Pubs that have giant rainbow flags hanging outside; The Caxton doesn't.
Not a lover of belly pork but like the look of the numerous trimmings
Why The Caxton? Is there a historical link to the printer
A nice way to spend a couple of hours, and it keeps the local in business.
I love Belly Pork, it's my favourite piece of Pork.
I don't think so, I think it was just in homage.
What could be better!
Great atmosphere with equally great food is the ideal. Your pub meal looks outstanding.
It would be nice to discover the story behind the naming
Yes it was very good. We're lucky to have The Caxton as our local.
Sounds like the real English pub we foreigners envisage and hope to visit.
The meal looks excellent, You are eating well Cro - have you got a Weightwatchers nearby?
It's a classic. Nothing pretentious, just a good local Pub'.
Since we've got back, I can't even find my scales!
I think the atmosphere inside a place (like a pub or a coffee shop) is extremely important as outside of the food or coffee, it's what makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
I could get used to that as well beautifully presented wonderful meal plus.
Next week , I will go with you. Try everything on the menu eventually for us , won't you?
The Caxton isn't perfect, but it comes close.
I think we've tried most of it. The Pork takes a lot of beating.
Belly pork makes excellent schnitzels.
