Rory and Reg.

Just like last year, Rory started 'first go' after having been left in the barn, unused and unloved, for 9 months.

Reg, on the other hand hasn't run for two years, on account of a flat battery. This has now been rectified. Reg (the red one) is almost brand new and has hardly been used, so a new €90 battery had him up and going at once.

So, why two mowers? Well one throws the cut grass out sideways, and the other does so from the rear.

I much prefer driving Rory (the grey one), he is simple to use and very manoeuvrable, but Reg has a more robust attitude towards life, and is a tad unruly. However, both do what's asked of them extremely well.

I have used both today (yesterday), and the garden is once again looking kempt.

  1. Kempt is a good look.
New battery for newish Reg is a bit of a hard knock?

    1. Batteries, even small ones, are very expensive these days. Best to look after them.

  2. Insects, birds, small mammals and perhaps a snake or two are yelling, "It's Armageddon!" after watching their habitat being struck by both Storm Rory and Storm Reg. A double whammy.

  4. Good old Rory. You and him obviously make a good team. Must be satisfying to see it neat and clean.

  6. Why two? For me, it is much like chain saws: You need two so you're sure one of 'em will work! Cheers - I have to go mow now....

    2. Proper men can never have too many toys. I've got a big old Suzuki quad bike with a manual gear box and three motorbikes. I'm far too old for the latter, I'm borderline with the quad but know younger folk that love to give the bikes an airing. The Maico is out this Sunday hence the new battery. The pilot is Victoria. I'll start it on the rollers as I'm a fat bastard and she weighs eight stone wet through. In theory they kick start but I've never had any luck with that.

  7. Soon be mowing here for haylage. I like mowing, it is amazing how many macro shots I get of insects sitting on the mower deck. I only get a tenner an hour for machine driving so stop often to see what I've found. I'm not a fast mower, tedder or bailer but I am cheap.
Batteries are a bit pricey in France. I've just purchased a couple of top quality ones,
one for a 450 Maico the other for an Aprilia 600 twin on electric start, both are high compression engines. They cost £41.00p plus VAT each delivered. Forgotten the make but they are Japanese, Tiko, Niko or something like that. You should get a mower battery for 2/3rds that. It may be worth looking into leaving them on a maintenance charger, it's worth getting one that will do a few batteries and make sure it has temperature monitoring. Your battery will thank you and last forever and ever*.....Do not get a trickle charger as you are away most of the time and one doesn't want a nasty fire or maybe you do.
    * Lasting forever is getting to be a consideration for me and no doubt yourself. Don't spend a fortune not that the chargers are expensive. About £40.00p and at that price they run a de-sulphate cycle, whatever that means. I think that every so often they drop a big load across the battery and it boils off the little white bits on the plates. I'll ask our sparky if you need clarification.

    1. They're both running fine now, and I hope will do so for a few more years. Haylage making will start very soon here, we need it done as our view from out front is limited by metre high grass.

    2. No, not haylage in France. What will Neil think of that?

  8. 'Rory'.I love that. We had to get a new battery for the big tractor this year. Ouch from this of the pond as well.

  9. Pud, if you knew anything about natural history you'd know that snakes, small mammals and insects have little chance of being caught. They feel vibrations, have spacial awareness and bugger off. One has to sit still to see them. Try it, it can take an hour to snap a Scorpion Fly. Then pontificate and virtue signal.

  10. Freshly mowed grass always makes the property look manicured. You must be pleased with your accomplishment.
