The offending wall has miraculously disappeared. Well done, Cro. You've chosen well. It's amazing what a bit of judicious planting does.
Over the years I've managed to block out my neighbours (and they me). It was a joint effort and we are well pleased. No more eye contact over the not-high-enough fence when we are pottering quietly in the garden (though they are not nearly as quiet as me, but that's another story!).
Neighbours are all well and good, but only when you want them to be! Ours (behind the wall) are noisy, and messy, and seem to have an aversion to finishing any job they start. It used to be such a beautiful house.
I shall avoid the subject of neighbours (it only takes one out of a whole load of great ones) and concentrate of Lavatera. They are wonderful plants because they can survive in a climate like yours and absolutely love the salt-laden winds here on Lewis a hundred yards or so from the sea.
They are what's known as a 'good doer'. Perfect for non flower people such as myself. Stick a piece of twig in the ground, and about two years later you have a huge flowering bush.

Now they're making loads of mess elsewhere, they don't seem to be happy unless they're living amongst CHAOS.

We're trying to encourage some Ivy behind all the deciduous stuff. It'll take a while.
It certainly has, unfortunately the weight of all the water pulls them down as well.
