1st Choucroute of Autumn/Winter.

With the colder weather (it was 2 C yesterday morning) comes Sauerkraut Season.

The above photo comes from last year, but was exactly the same as the one I prepared last night.

Like almost anything, the first of the season is always the best, and I've been looking forward to a dish of Sauerkraut even through the heat of Summer.

Officially it should also contain a few boiled potatoes, but I can never be bothered. Just the cabbage and a variety of smoked pork sausages does the job. Lovely!

Looks good.

Nice cutlery as well.

Looking at this while drinking my morning coffee. Reminds me of an English brekkie..minus the sauerkraut. One of those sausages would go down well on this gloomy autumn morning.

I've just finished the leftovers for my breakfast. Naughty but nice.

See above. I can't yet see the morning here, but the temperature is 8 C.

Hurrah! for seasonality, meals could become so boring otherwise. With that change of temperature I'm not surprised that you need more sustaining food.

2 C yesterday morning, and 6 C this morning. At least our daytimes are warm and sunny!

I think I can smell it; my taste buds are salivating. I'm generally off food but today your picture has made me happy.

Greetings Cro, I am a first time visitor who dropped in from The Poor Farm blog (Donna O). This post gave me a dinner thought this week inky kielbasi will be used with the sauerkraut. I don't use potatoes but apples instead. Never had leftovers for breakfast.

Welcome. I'm not sure if I've had Sauerkraut leftovers for breakfast before either; but I'm game for anything.

With the photo and your enthusiastic description, you have just about convinced me to try sauerkraut...it's been decades since my last try.

I declared the season's change this morning with a bowl of oatmeal with raisins and milk. I'm planning to make a split pea and ham soup later on today. The radiators are hissing in a comfy sort of tempo.

Best wishes.

We have been lighting evening fires for the past 3 days; definitely a nip in the air. I love Ham and Pea soup.

I must say it looks delicious Cro and
so alien to the kind of food we eat here.

I've always thought of it as rather Germanic, but it comes to us via French Alsace. Very much a part of our winters here.

I adore your food photos. They always look so tasty.
I think I would enjoy a few potatoes in with the sauerkraut and your pork sausage looks so wonderful.
I love sauerkraut on my hot dogs too.

cheers, parsnip

It's my pork.

Someone recently suggested I have it in sandwiches instead of coleslaw. I haven't tried it yet.
