Rocca Imperiale.

There are some pretty amazing villages around the world, but this must be one of the most intriguing.

I wouldn't want to walk (or drive) all the way up to the top, or walk all the way down to the nearest shop, but otherwise it does look like a really beautiful place to live.

If you wish to visit, the village is called 'Rocca Imperiale' and can be found in Calabria, Southern Italy.

The photo is slightly deceptive as it's taken from above. In fact the village is not as steeply conical as it appears.

However, it does represent the standard layout of superiority, with the Lord in his Castle at the top of the pile, and the minions at the bottom. T'was always thus.

  2. Intriguing. Quite a few southern Italian towns and villages are similar. I doubt all but the most athletic tourists would make it to the top!

    1. I certainly wouldn't, unless there was a Taxi service.

  3. Personally I think it looks like a terrible place to live.

    1. People at the top would have to like being at home. As long as Amazon and Waitrose delivered everything you'd be OK.

  4. It's strange that I, like John, at first saw some kind of food in the picture. Shawarma.

  5. Wow! That is amazing! I did not know of Rocca Imperiale's existence. Thank you for posting about it.

    1. Snap! I didn't know about it either until recently.

  6. The land and building developer in me wonders about the question of infrastructure. Since this place is over 5 centuries old I am wondering about water and waste. Google Earth shows the topography as being varied in height but shows no waste water or sewage treatment plants. Where does all the "stuff" go? A sewer backup would be a nightmare! I don't see cisterns anywhere that store water like they do in Greece and in Italy. And what I read makes me think that this is a high rent district.

    1. No problem getting the 'used water' down, but I presume getting it up must be done by hefty pumps. What happens to it later is anyone's guess!

  7. An amazing photo. I googled the village to see more. One of those very picturesque Italian villages that tourists like to visit. I wouldn't mind spending a couple of nights there wandering around and sampling their food and wine

    1. Yes, a great place to visit, but living there might be a bit more 'challenging'.

  8. Not for me. My preference is for woodland landscapes with long views in to the forest.

    1. You'd like our house in France, you describe it perfectly.

  9. I've been there. I wouldn't have recognised it from your image, it is built on a bit of a hill but nothing like as dramatic. Daily Mail again?

    1. As I said, the photo is taken from above, giving it a faux image of being conical. But it's still a remarkable place.

  10. It would be handy if there was a shop on each level, but I don't see any room for even a tiny backyard anywhere. I couldn't live there.

    1. No trees, no grass, probably no birds. Nice for a long weekend in a fancy hotel (if there is one), but no more.
