It's Summer's 'Silly Season', and that means hot nights and rioting. Goodness knows what started this one in Leeds, but it soon got out of hand, and the usual suspects quickly joined in with the smashing, burning, and probably looting that usually accompanies such events.
Below shows the newly elected 'Gaza Party' councillor Mothin Ali attempting to stop the riot, and pouring water on the burning cars.
Leeds is a city in Northern England's county of Yorkshire. It has a very concentrated ethnic minority population, and I can only imagine that there is some conflict between the Leeds Hamas supporters and the newly elected Labour government, who understandably are trying to remain impartial over Middle Eastern affairs (hence Mr Ali's recent election).
Rioting does no-one any good, and will often 'stereotype' the reputation of certain groups. The mess will need to be tidied, cars and busses replaced, and countless windows reglazed. Local 'rates' will probably need to rise to pay for it all.
I have just read that the Police were called out at 5 pm, then having seen the scale of the riots, didn't return until 1 am. They probably feared for their lives.
But not all is bad during this year's Silly Season. I see that the founding members of the 'Just Stop Oil' group have been given some quite hefty prison sentences. Their attempt to stop the flow of traffic on the M25 (London's ring-road) was serious enough for a judge to award 5 years for the group's woke founder and leader Roger Hallam, and 4 years each for his wokey acolytes. A tad harsh maybe.
However. Plenty of time for reflection.
No, those sentences were, if anything, too lenient, bearing mind how many innocent people's lives were disrupted by these thoroughly nasty individuals. What is worse is that Sir Kneeler will have them out of jail after a few weeks with his new policy towards prisoners.
ReplyDeleteThey are already planning to release 5,500 criminals from prison. I expect the 5 above will be amongst them.
DeleteI have now read that the Leeds rioting stared when some local children were taken into care from their Romani parents. The protest continued last night, to try to get the children returned.
ReplyDeleteIt is probably best to put the amendment in the post itself and not as a comment. Not all folk read through the comments before commenting themselves.
DeleteThank you Cro for truthfully spelling out what the riot was all about. There is a large Muslim community in the North and on the whole they are integrated very well. I believe there is just under 10% Muslim, 6% black and the rest mostly white in Leeds. Like you I think the riot was a combination of a hot summer's day (the only one so far this summer!), the young kicking off, and a perceived injustice which will get sorted.
ReplyDeleteThe initial report I'd read didn't specify any concrete reasons for the troubles. I hope this does get sorted, it sounds as if the Romani family needs help rather than being punished in this way.
DeleteRiots and protests.
ReplyDeleteSounds like another country dear to your heart 😉
They follow me around.
DeleteI also read that this time the riots were due to other reasons, but everything else will come, there are so many signs of that, the easiest thing is to ignore it and say how beautifully the minorities have integrated. Time will tell, and I know almost clearly what the time will say.
ReplyDeleteIf they were well integrated, they wouldn't attack the police at the slightest opportunity.
DeleteThe riotous unrest in Leeds appears to surround an event within the "Roma" community. "Romas" hail from Romania. Even there they are a fringe society that does not play by the usual rules. In this instance, social workers were following a court order to take some children into care and the Roma community fought back. They are often at odds with the host Muslim community who tend to be conservative and peace loving.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't really understand why the Muslim community were rioting on behalf of the Romani people. I think it's a case of 'any excuse for a fight'.
DeleteFirst I'll say I applaud those sentences for the Just Stop Oil group. Maybe others will think twice before conducting senseless protests.
ReplyDeleteThe Roma communities here are very vocal when they think theyve been targeted. At the moment theyve been caught burning wires to remove the copper inside. Fires which have spread and caused a lot of damage. They beat up the tv crew that filmed them but we still saw the footage.
They're also responsible for 'stray bullet' killings'.
The Roma are at odds with everyone including themselves. Are the Roma from Romania? They are reputed to have come from India and Pakistan and down through the Balkans many hundreds of years ago.
The Roma (in the UK) seem to have their own rules and regulations, and are often unwilling to accept any others. At the recent huge 'Appleby Fair', they were fighting, stealing, and left masses of rubbish everywhere. They are not popular!
DeleteBlame the government for all the open borders...not enough police...forcing people to live where they don't want to live...interfering with parents and their children...riots...loss of jobs...horrible healthcare...I could go on and on...but Wait! Don't Blame the government! Blame the idiot voters that think MORE government is the answer! They love spending OUR money and getting rich from it.
ReplyDeleteIt's the same in my country, the USA.

I'm afraid what you say is true, and the worst is that when they arrive, they usually don't speak any English and they congregate where there are familiar voices, foods, and even clothing. They make little effort to assimilate, and problems in their home country are re-enacted on the streets of their new one.
DeleteA full-on riot over children being removed from their parent's home is most unusual. Something does not sound right.
ReplyDeleteIt's a combination of good excuse, hot weather, petty crime, hooliganism, and racial differences. It's also a question of 'ghettoism', with large numbers of people of the same ethnic group all living in one concentrated area.
