Before we came away in late May, I planted a couple of Tomato plants in our bijou front garden (about 2 Sq m's).
One was a Roma cooking tomato, and the other was a Marmande type salad tomato. The Roma are really going crazy with lots of ripe fruit, and the other should be ripening just as we return.
I wish now I'd put in more plants, the tiny area could accommodate at least four plants; next year perhaps!
Tomatoes are the one vegetable that EVERYONE should grow. The difference between home grown and shop bought is amazing; they are almost like two different vegs. They grow well in big pots or grow bags. Or if you only have a window box, then the variety 'Tumbler' will grow well.
Our next door neighbour also grows some. Maybe we'll have our own little two house Horticultural Show, with just one prize for the best Tomato. Perhaps we could encourage the whole street to grow some next year and have a really fun 'Best Tomato' competition in September.
If everyone started growing their own, we might even see an end to those horrible tasteless supermarket fruits. What dreadful things they are.
How wonderful. They look very healthy. It will be great to get home to fresh, home grown tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteI can hardly wait. We have a good supply here thanks to my friend José, but to have our own will be wonderful.
DeleteTo be fair to the UK and supermarkets: There are some amazing tomatoes to be had. If you are willing to pay the price. I currently get gems, courtesy of Waitrose, from the Isle of White.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be difficult to grow the amount of tomatoes I get through myself. One of my favourite fruits.
I am happy for you that you have something to look forward to when coming back to Brighton. Doing the maths I take it it'll be the end of August(?).
U
I think we return early September. We're already making preparations. There's a lot to do before we lock-up. I'm sure good Toms ARE available in the UK, but at what price? We too use a lot!
DeleteI agree about the huge difference in flavour. We have six tomato plants, all different varieties and some producing more than others but all have been wonderful so far.
ReplyDeleteI really wonder what the commercial growers do to their Tomatoes to make them so tasteless?
DeleteMy tomatoes grown in a commercial growbag all failed this year, the plant in the ground is huge. There is no comparison to the taste of home grown ones.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Chalk and Cheese!
DeleteMy main reaction is: Who waters your tomatoes while you are lounging about in France? Surely not Sir Seth!
ReplyDeleteLord Seth, if you please! I think they've had enough intermittent rain this year to keep things going. The plants certainly look very healthy.
DeleteThe idea of everyone on the street having a tomato plant is appealing - until blight strikes. I have lost so many years od tomato crops just as the reach their most splendiderous size - and have yet to ripen. Gone, all, in less than a week.
ReplyDeleteThey need to be sprayed with a Copper Sulphate solution; which is the only 'chemical' approved by Bio Growers.
