Heatwave

Most of us look forward to Summer weather; hot sunshine, cloudless skies, and some refreshing foreign Sea or Pool to plunge into.

Generally it does tend to be a bit like that, but occasionally things get out of hand, and the temperature rises to 'uncomfortable'.

Yesterday our 'in the shade' temperature rose to 36 C, and all we wanted to do was avoid it. For most of Summer I wear just a pair of shorts; no shoes, no T shirt, and only occasionally a hat. Perfect for 25 C, but not for 36 C.

The pool water has risen to 28 C, our open concrete terrace burns my feet, and poor Billy (in his fur coat) is feeling lethargic. Our sitting room is traditionally dark and cool, so that's where we spend most of our afternoons. The weather we've been anticipating through Winter, is now being avoided.

We drink litres of cold water, eat plenty of Magnums, and dine on Salads. Any outdoor work, pool cleaning etc, is done as early as possible; at the latest before about 10 am.

I have only just opened-up our outdoor covered terrace. It had been used as storage space over Winter, and needed some re-organisation. The outdoor Fridge is working, and is filled with Beers Tonics and Fizz. The table and chairs have all been cleaned, and comfy cushions distributed. And the big 'fire pit' BBQ has been removed and taken to its Summer location.

The heat also brings out 'bugs'. We have an excess of Bees, Wasps, Flying Ants, Horseflies, Hornets, and other general buzzing and stinging nasties. And our army of small Wall Lizards are holding their annual Olympics.

Yes Folks; it's our wonderful SUMMER.

There may be advantages to living up here after all...

    1. Yesterday was TOO hot, it's a bit cooler this morning and I've been working outdoors since about 7 am (6 am UK time). Just 22 C at the moment; much better!

  2. I don't know what it is with the English and weather. They always grumble. It's either too cold or too hot. It's tiring. Try to be Spanish or Italian or Greek or caught in the desert with only one more drop of water left.

Anyway, rejoice: It's Gazpacho time, and ice cold watermelon!

    1. I only ever complain (like everyone else) when it becomes TOO HOT. Yes, even the French, the Spanish, and the Greeks complain too. I imagine it's only the Germans who never mention a word!

    2. Germans, as do the Swiss and Austrians, do talk a lot about weather. It's a perfect conversation opener. But they don't whine about it, just acknowledge it for what it is. Like HOT, COLD. Wet? Shrug shoulder.

Alas, seasons in those countries are clear cut. Winter is winter, summer is summer. None of this wishy washy English unpredictable nonsense. Though, admittedly, the Germanic nations will make allowances for April weather. Should you be at a loss this afternoon whilst in heat induced sloth you may like to listen to Disney's Bambi song "April Showers". It's soothing. You can feel the the cooling little droplets on your skin.

Anyway, you disappoint. There I was thinking you might thank me for reminding you of the joys of Gazpacho. Nada.

    3. I find Gaspacho a tad uninteresting. It's only real quality is that it's served COLD.

  3. Perfect summer weather up here in Sunny Yorkshire. No nasty bugs. Yesterday afternoon I lay on my back on the lawn with my two granddaughters and looked up at the summer sky where swallows and housemartins performed their aerobatics. If you fancy a house swap, you can forget it Monsieur.

    1. Lady M pointed out a nest of departing Flying Ants right by my naked foot yesterday. They left me alone, as I did them!

  4. We too are experiencing a bit of a heatwave in the U.K. but the difference is that here it was 30 degrees yesterday. That was enough! Cooler today and next week.
