I swore I'd never write a piece about vacuum cleaners...but I lied!

Here I sit.... I've had an enviable education, was once an aspiring stockbroker, have a 1st class hons degree in Fine Art, and I've even exhibited work at London's prestigious ICA......but (give me strength) I now find myself enthusing about a bloody vacuum cleaner; whatever next!

We've just bought this new-fangled 'cordless' vacuum cleaner. It charges-up via a tiny phone-style-charger, then has a running time of about 30 mins; plenty for a small house like ours (half an hour's cleaning per season is enough for anyone).

No nasty wires follow you about, no long hose pipe, and no lumpy dust container to pull behind you. It's very practical, very manoeuvrable, and one gets around very quickly.

It has a rotating brush at the business end, which we thought would be perfect for dog hairs; especially on the carpet. My only concern was that hair would clog-up the brushes. In fact they do no such thing, and everything passes directly into the small dust collector, that (I think) needs to be emptied after each use.

I've only used it a couple of times, for about 10 mins each time, and the dust container was almost full. This could be a sign of either a very dirty house, or a very efficient machine; or even a bit of both. Anyway it works well. and the triangular bottom bit means it can get into those 'difficult corners' (that's what the salesman insisted on telling me).

p.s. Of course, as usual it came in bloody bits and had to be assembled, but that took just 2 mins. It's made by Rowenta who are German; had it been Chinese it would probably have taken me all day.

    1. I think I'm regretting posting it already!

  2. I love the deign. It will get awards I think regardless of whether it does its job or not. You could hang on it on the wall as your latest art acquisition

  3. That is a sleek and somewhat scary beast silently biding its time next to your heater, contemplating its next move. I'd rather like to have one just like it! I hate my lumbering noisy awkward-to-drag-along electrolux. What do the dogs think of it?

    1. They hate it, as they do our 2 more traditional cleaners.

  4. Now that is a seriously weird looking machine. Very space age.

    Ain't that the truth...

    1. It gives the machine enough time to charge itself.

  6. Vacuum cleaners are important, so don't apologise. I was intrigued so I went to the Rowenta website to see if they are available in NZ (not easily.) They also have those little frisbee-like robot things that buzz around your floors, I would really love one. Your dogs would really get a kick out of one of those. (Or they may try to kill it.)

    1. Maybe a robot will be next on the list, but how it would cope with all our clutter, I'm not sure.

  7. Looks good Cro. A friend has just bought a battery operated one and it runs for three hours before needing recharging. She is very thrilled with it. The times they are a'changing it seems - I do agree about that wretched cable that trails behind you all the time. Also my 'daily' will unplug my lamps to use the sockets for the vac and never plugs the lamps in again. It can be very irritating.

    1. 'Dailys' all have annoying habits. We had one who was obsessed by rearranging things by height. The tallest always had to go on the right, and (yes) the smallest on the left. It used to drive my mother NUTS.

  8. Does Lady Magnon insist that by not going over the same area at least 10 times, you are not making a good enough job of it, as if it is going to pick up any more dust than it did the first pass? (You may detect a hint of frustration in my voice, but H.I. is quite capable of spending over half an hour on a 5 minute job).

    1. SHE hasn't actually tried this new one yet, but with the dog hairs I do find myself going over the carpet several times. Sorry.

    2. We don't have carpets - it is bare boards I am talking about. Still sorry?!

  9. God. How I hate "hoovering". The noise gets on my nerves. If your beatsie did the job quicker it might be worth the investment

  10. I know exactly what you are talking about here, we have just bought a G-Tec cordless and I am so overjoyed with it, I want everyone to know how brilliant it is. Five cats need a really efficient hoover and in all my 68 years I have never had such a good cleaner. I'm assuming yours is similar.
Forget Dyson, I've had 3 of those and this kicks them out of the widow.

    1. I like the way they bend flat, and can get under cupboards etc.... Jeez, I'm sounding like an old cleaning lady.

    2. I'm not going to say anything except that the guy in the cafe with the smouldering looks probably did not know what a vacuum cleaner was:)

  12. To my knowledge Dyson are definitely the best.

  13. I've been considering getting a cordless...was thinking of a Dyson...it's getting a bit much on the back pulling the canister along bumping and banging into things. Now I shall investigate the Rowenta as well.

    1. There are lots of different makes on the market; I'm not suggesting that Rowenta is the best.

  15. What a man! My man won't vacuum. I have a Dyson for carpet and another for hardwood and tile floors. Each one works better on the different surfaces. Hate pet hair and dirty floors.

  16. Nice lightweight design. I like it. Best of all, it sounds like it's doing its job! I've known many el crappo vacuums so it's good to know there's one that actually works!

  17. You've blogged about other tools that have worked well for you (I loved the one where you talked about your favourite knife), so blogging about a vacuum cleaner is no different. It's a tool in your household, and this one works especially well for you.

I have a Euroclean Hip Vac vacuum cleaner that i really like and suits my needs wonderfully well. At some point, i might have to consider one that's a bit lighter, so it's good to know what has worked well for others.
