Anyone who remembers 'Crossroads' (above) will remember the shaky sets, the wooden acting, and the ridiculous story lines. It was a disaster from beginning to end, but people loved it for just that.
The modern equivalent must be 'Doctors', a BBC TV early afternoon show with second rate actors, and very silly stories.
The good thing about 'Doctors' is that the GP surgery, where it all takes place, is permanently without patients. It must be the only medical centre in the UK that is without sick people.
The programme comes on just after the One-O-Clock news, so groans can be heard throughout the UK as the clock hits one minute past TWO. "Oh no, it's Doctors". Everyone turns off.
It was for this reason that I watched an episode recently, and, yes, it is as dreadful as one might imagine.
There were squabbling doctors, a couple of bizarre receptionists, and a male nurse. There's a daily story, and never an explanation why the only waiting patient is never seen by a doctor.
If only all GP's surgeries were thus.
Verdict: 2/10
It sounds much the same as our Health Centre. It's always empty. I can't comment on the doctors as I've never seen one, they call appointments having a few minutes chat on the phone every few months.
ReplyDeleteI have one of those calls tomorrow, plus a visit to the Diabetic nurse this morning.
DeleteYou're a bit late in watching it as it's been on for 24 years and has been dreadful right from the start!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is, thank goodness I haven't been watching it for 24 years. Once was enough.
DeleteSounds excellent. BBC at its finest.
ReplyDeleteYeah, like, WOW!
DeleteI used to watch it years ago, but haven't done so for a long time. It was quite entertaining early on!
ReplyDeleteI suppose it still is on a certain level, but there's so much wrong with it. It's all so amateur!
DeleteNot a programme I've ever even heard of, but I don't watch daytme TV.
ReplyDeleteI read that Victoria Wood based the hilarious "Acorn Antiques" on "Crossroads"! I only watched it once, after a friend told me that Jane Rossington, the actress who played the daughter, was at school with us! Close association with a "star" didn't make it any more watchable!
Acorn Antiques was hilarious; even better than Crossroads. The only person I really remember from Crossroads was Benny (?), the rather dim handy man.
DeleteI have not watched soaps for decades, probably since our daughters grew up, and we don't do daytime TV.
ReplyDeleteI'm not interested in soaps at all, they all seem as bad as each other.
DeleteI have seen it a couple of times and you are right! There's a dearth of patients. It seems to be about relationships between the doctors and that kind of thing. Rather boring in my humble opinion.
ReplyDeleteAwful. And I don't think anyone could name any of the 'actors'.
DeleteTelevision came to us very late, in the early seventies, so we were spared many soap series, but then we started producing some of our own.
ReplyDeleteWell I hope yours are now better than most of ours. Not that I watch any of ours!
DeleteIt's many years since I've followed a soap. The Greek ones are mostly very dramatic and get on my nerves
ReplyDeleteI think it's a trait throughout all countries. Drama is the only thing that keeps people watching.
