My TV choices.

Without a garden to tend, I have more time on my hands in the cooler months, so, if I don't have a decent book to read, I do watch a bit of TV.

My taste in TV is quite limited. I don't watch violent programmes, or disaster movies, or soaps where they do nothing but shout at each in 'estuary' accents. In fact there's very little that I do regularly watch (other than The News and PMQ's).

I do like The Repair Shop, even though they're mostly repeats. I quite like DIY SOS, even though they're also all repeats. I really enjoy Drew Pritchard's 'Salvage Hunters'. I enjoy all Rick Stein shows. I sometimes watch 'Escape to the Country', but seldom watch more than 10 mins. That's about it. I think they're all repeats.

There's a new Archeological show on BBC2 (Digging Britain?), but it's very slow and rarely of any real interest.

Strangely I do rather like seeing old barn-find vehicles being restored, and there is a programme that caters. I think it's called Shed-n-Buried. The content is interesting, but the presenter is a plonker.

There seems to be far too many repeats on TV at the moment, but none of which interest me too much. If we're going to have endless repeats, why not a re-run of Ab-Fab or Lovejoy? We used to have such good short plays or sit-coms; these have now all gone.

  1. Have you looked at what used to be UK TV (now called U I think)? They have run quite a number of classic BBC series - New Tricks, Miss Marple, Lovejoy etc, and its free to watch, although you do have to put up with adverts.

    1. I shall have a look, it would be good to see certain old favourites again.

  2. I also watch some of the programs you watch, I also watch the food channel and the travel channel, but mainly news channels here and around the world, especially in the last year. Reality has turned into an adventure movie that I could not have imagined.

    1. Some of the sob-stories are a bit exaggerated. But it's all good stuff.

  4. You might like to have a look at " The Detectorists". It was shown a few years ago and I loved it. I " binge " watched it again on IPlayer recently. Toby Jones and McKenzie Crook are the main characters. It is a gentle comedy/ look at life and excellent on many levels. You would need to watch a few episodes to get the feel of it. Also the song at the beginning is beautiful!!

    2. I do like McKenzie Crook as an actor; I'll have a look. Thanks.

    3. I really liked "Detectorists" too!

  5. I used to watch The Repair Shop but the sob stories put me off. I wished we could see more details of each repair process.

    1. Yes, I agree. It always seems to be raining there too; which is strange.

  6. I wish they'd do another fly-on-the-wall reality programme called "The Magnons at Home":-
CRO Just goin' to Sainsbury's Mabel!
    MABEL Don't forget me fags!
    CRO Owt else love?
MABEL Yeah me gin! Get me three bottles. And some tonic water too.
CRO There's a little word beginning with "P"!
    MABEL Oh yeah - "Pringles"!
(Cro leaves the house with a sigh)

    1. I've just come back with Rhum, Port, Sherry, and 6 bottles of wine. Most for Christmas. You weren't far off!

  7. I always loved The Repair Shop but I am with JayCee ..... they have focused on the sob stories too much but it's still a lovely, gentle programme. I think they have removed some of the repeats with Jay Blades in because of the abuse charges against him ! I reiterate re The Detectorists. I must have watched it at least three times. I think that, now we have streaming, there are some really good programmes out there ..... it just takes a while sifting through it all. XXXX

    1. I will have a look for The Detectorists. I'm a bit lazy when it comes to searching for programmes.

  8. I'm fed up with all the repeats too, Cro. Some of them seem to be on a continual loop. I must look out for the Detectorists - I've seen a trailer, but I'm not sure if I can actually get the channel. My TV (a Sony Bravia) is about 15 years old but still working perfectly - never needed to have anyone in to look at it, fingers crossed. The channels available are a bit and miss, depending on which digi box you have.
Have a look at "A House in Time", if you haven't already seen it. I was reminded of it on another blog this morning - it seems there's a new series starting. I've found previous ones fascinating.
The dog and I sometimes watch "Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly" (I'm looking for tips) but I'm afraid she's getting some very bad ideas!

    1. I did see a few episodes of A House in Time; fascinating. We too occasionally watch DBB, and usually shout at the TV screen. There are some very silly dog owners about!!!

  9. Our tv is slightly better. Not so many re-runs . Loads of quiz type games which I like. It astonishes me how much I remember of history and geography. Greeks love reality shows and their old black and white slapstick comedy or dramas from the 60s and 70s.
K watches allthe football which gives me the chance to read, knit or listen to youtube.

    1. We have the 'dancing' programme on tonight, so I shall probably watch some of that. Everyone likes to become a dance expert for a while.

  10. I think thrice before watching BBC/ITV news. They promote the government's agenda.
I have more fun skimming the internet for an hour first thing. As for their light entertainment, I'm afraid I don't have the time or the will to pick through the dross.

    1. And it's amazing how much dross there is! Especially with the word 'celebrity' attached.

  11. If you like home building and repair TV, you might enjoy: "Ask this Old House?" Homeowners have a problem, and they are seeking assistance from a builder, plumber, electrician or landscaper. "This Old House" is another home renovation program that I find quite good. Hardship issues are not included in the programming.
I recently watched a program on "National Trust Gardens" and it was fantastic.

    1. There are good programmes out there, but it's a matter of finding them, and also finding the time.
