100 days.

Yes, my friends; it's just 100 days until Christmas.

Normally I would ban any mention of Christmas, or any marketing of Christmas products, until about December 15th, but when I saw these (below), I couldn't resist.

I'm a sucker for Pork Pies, Mince Pies, and Crumpets, all good British specialties. It's not really Crumpet weather yet, but I do have a pack of 6 in the cupboard.

Mince Pies, however, are another matter; they can be enjoyed at any time of year, and in any weather. I don't even think they should be associated with Christmas. I note that the box is not specifically Christmassy; which was very wise of Sainsbury's.

We shall be having one of these each this afternoon, in the hot sunshine.

  1. No mince pies here but there was a packet of crumpets in the fridge. I think they have all gone now.

    1. I was probably a bit hasty buying the Crumpets. I expect they'll stay uneaten for a while.

  3. I eat one mince pie then freeze the others. By the next day they are all gone - half or totally frozen.

    1. Lady M always used to make her own. She would make LOTS, and they all went as soon as they were out of the oven. These shop bought ones are not quite as popular, but still very good.

  4. I eat crumpets all year round .... I absolutely love them but, I have far too much butter on them ! I am just wondering why you only eat them in the colder weather ? Is it a comfort eating thing ? XXXX

    1. That's exactly how one should eat them; hot with lashings of butter. Wonderful.

  5. Bit too early in the season for us, I've not made the mincemeat yet, having said that, we are still eating hot cross buns, which I love.

    1. We ate plenty of Hot X Buns before we left for France. None in the shops now, but it won't be long!!!

    2. Our local Tesco extra has them on sale, not seaonal.

  6. Looking through a kitchen cupboard recently I found a jar of Robertson's mincemeat, bought just before Christmas last year. It still has some shelf-life so I think I'll make some mince pies!
In the "old" days I used to make my mincemeat from scratch, รก la Delia's recipe, but it was a chore making the actual pies. Haven't seen any crumpets for a long time, but then I haven't been to Iceland (the store) the only place that sells them, since just before last Christmas!

    1. We have a couple of jars of Mincemeat in the cupboard with sell by dates that would shock. I expect they're fine, no doubt Lady M will give them a go nearer Christmas.

  7. Ahh, crumpets and mince pies. I'll make my own mince pies at xmas, or there won't be any in our house.
Crumpets are off my menu nowadays. I pile the butter on steaks instead.
I don't want to hear about Xmas yet!!
Let me finish my summer hols

    1. My wife always made her own pies, and they were so good they disappeared in an instant. I agree about the C word, I shall try not to mention it again.

  8. I bought the exact same box as yours last week, sadly husband has never liked them (!!) and I therefore had to eat all 4. Delicious.

  9. I understand that in "Down South" you commonly use the term "mince pies" for your eyes. Here in "Up North" we just say "eyes" to avoid confusion.

    1. We do indeed, and we say 'Yorkshire Pud' instead of 'Good'. As in "That's right Yorkshire Pud".

  10. Got to disagree, it's always crumpet time in our house. I am the only one that likes them though. A pack of six will do me Saturday and Sunday morning. Have to wait a few weeks for mince pies then I shall be making my usual couple of dozen, plus the sausage rolls which are too my own recipe. They don't last long though.

    1. They have to have LOTS of salted butter on them. Don't encourage the others, that way there's more for you.

  11. We shall be spending Christmas somewhere where there will definitely be no mince pies or Christmas pud.

    1. Give me a Pork pie, a Crumpet, or a Mince Pie, and I'm as happy as a sand boy.

    2. I had to look up "sand boy". I understand fully.

  13. Outside of Christmas, mince pies are hard to find in the US. Christmas in 100 days does not seem possible. Autumn is hardly in place, today is 80 degrees plus F. It feels more like Summer.
