How did the area look? Did you imagine it with tiny fairy lights strung around and tables and chairs...maybe a long table and benches would suffice and make it more sociable?
It always worried me that our cat didn't really get-on with the dogs. I did my best to train them, and did eventually manage to get them to sit together on the same sofa, but it was never consensual.
