I've had this pud' in the cupboard for months, and had almost forgotten about it.
I've been a fan of the Fray Bentos steak and kidney pies since I was a student, but the puds only appeared after the microwave was invented (I think).
I know, I know; such things are a bit naff, but just occasionally they hit the spot perfectly. Yesterday Lady Magnon was away for most of the day, so I took the opportunity to allow it to have its moment (for my lunch). 3 mins in the microwave, and Bob's your uncle.
I don't know where else I would get a Steak and Kidney Pudding (unless I made it myself), so this one had to suffice.
Frankly it's not as good as the FB S & K Pies, but I enjoyed it anyway. The suet pastry is far too stodgy, but the overall taste is there. I don't think I shall be buying another one for a very long time. However, one in the cupboard for emergencies is not a bad idea.
Cro's Verdict: Not something you'd wish to eat too often. 6/10
The puddings have been around for over 50 years, probably longer. I used to make air hole, place tin in boiling water and steam for half an hour. Eat with peas.
ReplyDeleteI was abroad for 50 years, which is probably why I didn't see them. I wouldn't wait 30 minutes for one to cook, 3 mins in the microwave is far better.
DeleteThese used to be a store cupboard staple, but have gone downhill over time, less filling relative to pastry, and not as good taste.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit disappointed with this one, but not totally.
DeleteEww..no thanks. I remember their tinned pies from my childhood. Not a fond memory. All gristle and flabby pastry.
ReplyDeleteI liked those pies, and still do. I have about 4 in France. I think you must have had a Friday afternoon made one.
DeleteIndustrial Pud? For a moment I thought you were going to write about me! I haven't had a Fray Bentos tinned pie in years but I used to love them. Perhaps I will buy an emergency one for when my missus is out for the day.
ReplyDeleteI love the FB Steak and Kidney Pies. Some while ago I bought 9 by mistake; I bought them online, and mistakenly clicked on the buy button three times. I wasn't that fussed, they've proved very handy.
DeleteWe used to have the odd Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie when I was young. I bought one about 40 years ago as I remember liking them as a child ...... it was revolting !!!!! I think we have come a long way since then. M&S do a fresh steak and kidney pudding that you can freeze ..... it might be a better option ! XXXX
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. I shall have a look when I'm next in M & S. I still like the pies, I've never had a bad one.
DeleteIt's many years since I've has one of those pies. They used to be a "must" to keep in the cupboard as a standby.
ReplyDeleteI can remember going to one of my husband's colleagues homes for an evening meal and they proudly showed us a whole cupboard full of FB S & K pies. They brought them at the cash and carry in boxes of 36 and ate at least two every week!
I once bought 9 by mistake (3 lots of 3), but I wasn't too upset. I still have a few. I like them, but wouldn't want 2 a week!
DeleteThe taste of home. For you. I bet it brought you much pleasure when you lived in France . Id buy a meat pie in a tin too if I thought it would remind me of NZ.
ReplyDeleteYes, I still have a few, as long as our burglar didn't steal them.
DeleteAll Fray Bentos are good as a standby,
ReplyDeleteor an as-needed comfort food!!
Additionally, a Frey-Bantos empty tin makes a perfect "Pie for Two" tin!!
We have two in the baking tray draw!!
I think I used our old tins as part of a bird-feeder. They certainly weren't discarded.
DeleteThe English use of the term "Pud" mystifies the rest of the English speaking world.
ReplyDeleteIt's just short for 'pudding', and even that mystifies a lot of people. They think a pudding should be a dessert.
DeleteNot for me. I do not like all the preservatives added to prepared meals. A homemade pie of any kind is much preferred.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did actually look at all the ingredients; then tried to ignore them!
