Take an old bike, an engine, a long rusty chain, and a petrol tank, and you have a motorbike.
This one was made by my grandson 'Suave Harve'. I can't see any controls (accelerator, etc), so I'm not quite sure how it operates. But it's the idea that counts.
He's a bit of a whizz, our Harve', I imagine there will be more Heath Robinson machines to come.
This one won't win any races!
The nearest handlebar is a twist-grip from a moped... and the tank and engine look to be of the same provenance.... very neat.... how old is this budding post-Apocalypse engineer?
ReplyDeleteHe should have a t-shirt with "Not recycled.... REPURPOSED!" proudly emblazoned upon it!
I think he's just 18, but he made the bike a couple of years ago. I love its look.
DeleteIngenious! Has he seen the Derny pacing machines?
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the Derneys. They really are a one-off.
DeleteYou will have to go and watch some paced racing...I've watched them, and the big Thunderbirds pacing (where the pacer stands up riding the motorbike) at Herne Hill.
DeleteI've watched The Tour when it passes nearby, but I've never been to a velodrome.
DeleteYou have a very creative and brave grandson. Riding this requires quite a bit of courage.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it went very fast.
DeleteMaybe you should ask Harve to make you and Lady Magnon motorised bath chairs for when you are too old to get about. Nothing like getting ready for the future.
ReplyDeleteHe's working on it, but ours will be shower chairs, not bath.
DeleteThe signs of the future .... he's on his way. Innovative ...... this is someone who is going places. If you and I are still around and blogging in 10 years time, I look forward to see where he goes, career wise. XXXX
ReplyDeleteI was certainly very impressed, I'd like him to make one for me.
DeleteThat's one clever grandson. It wonderful seeing them growing up and finding their way .
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember him being born, and now this!!!
DeleteTinkering with such things shows a wonderfully 'inventive' mind. Watch this space and note his name I say!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had his know-how.
DeleteCreativity runs in the family.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, but mechanics passed me by.
Delete"Everything old is new again!" Fond memories. I had one very much like this in the 1960's. We made it from an old bike and a Maytag washing machine engine. Fun, dangerous, fun! No clutch, no throttle controls except reaching down and grabbing for a lever, no real brakes either. But fun!
ReplyDeleteDanger = Fun; all boys know that, and long may it live!
DeleteWhat a clever grandson you have, but those spoilsports at health and safety might not agree!
ReplyDeleteWe try to ignore 'Health & Safety'.
DeleteNice work building an electric bike. He's got talent and might be headed toward mechanical engineering or architecture. What is he considering?
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I can't remember for the moment. If I do I'll let you know.
DeleteInteresting idea. Does it run and does it have brakes?
