With no chimneys that needed cleaning, we had to find alternative work for the boys.
On the south end of the pool, behind the Pump House, is a large Bramley Apple tree, that, as usual, is loaded with fruit. And seeing as the boys love Apple Crumble, Grumsy enlisted their help to process some more apple.
In between bursts of rainfall, little Mischa manhandled the wheelbarrow, whilst Boo Boo gave instructions, acted as 'controller', and gave criticism where criticism was due.
There was a lot of peeling, chopping, and boiling, and the kitchen was filled with the strong aroma of Bramley. When cool, the cooked apples were bagged-up and frozen, and placed in a drawer that also contains Blackberries (in plastic cups).
Whilst at it, Grumsy made a crumble for last night. Perfect for a slightly Autumnal evening.
I think we should survive winter.
Looks like the makings of quite a few crumbles there. Yum.
ReplyDeleteOur favourite winter dessert.
DeleteMine too
DeleteWhat a wonderful sight, the boys and the freezer.
ReplyDeleteparsnip
Good boys, and helpful too.
DeleteDid you set them to polishing your shoes afterwards? Lovely photo of them, so sweet.
ReplyDeleteWe kept the shoes for today.
DeleteTeamwork!
ReplyDeleteWith Snakes and Ladders afterwards.
DeleteMy mother used to do baked apples. They were very popular with us. Do you ever do them?
ReplyDeleteWe only do them when we light the wood fired oven. It'll be a while yet.
DeleteApple crumble with lots of cream. So nice.
ReplyDeletePlenty of thick cream is essential.
DeleteI think I could happily survive the winter on a diet of blackberry and apple crumble, especially with the addition of thick cream.
ReplyDeleteWe only have about one a week, so we do need to top-up on roast Swan, Lark's tongues, and foie gras as well.
DeleteIt looks like you all had fun collecting the apples and making the apple Crumble. I bet it was even better eating it. Your sweet grandsons are beautiful boys and you must be having such a good time having them around.
ReplyDeleteThey always give me a big hug and kiss when they come down in the mornings. I'll miss that if they move-on; which they probably will.
DeleteGood food. An apple day .,. as the saying has it. We eat stewed apples almost every day, sometimes with other fruits such as plums, through autumn and winter. Stocks usually runs out about March. :-(
ReplyDeleteWe have stocks of apples, plums, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, peaches (bottled), and figs (also bottled). We tend to throw out two year old stocks and replace them.
DeleteBoo Boo is a little Bossy Boots, perhaps?! What a gorgeous bit of busy fun!
ReplyDeleteHe like to be in charge; a younger brother is perfect for him.
DeletePerhaps BooBoo's problem is lack of his own wheelbarrow. Good job on providing an appropriately sized tool.
ReplyDeleteYes, only one mini-barrow. He prefers to watch others do the hard work.
DeleteGrumsy - what a lovely family grandmother name...
ReplyDeleteAnd I see Boo Boo is wearing shoes in today's role of Chief Overseer.
Alphie
She was always known as Mumsy by our own children, then when she became a grandmother, it changed to Grumsy. Shoes were only being worn because it was pouring for most of the day. Wet feet are not good.
