I don't know why, but we no longer seem to have any of Lady Magnon's paintings or sculptures. We have quite a few watercolours, and a screen-print or two, but even some of those are now missing (or we can't find them).
However, we have recently found some slides of her work, one of which is below (dreadful photo). A large colourful painting that I wish was still here.
As I have said before, I've had more paintings stolen than I've sold, and I think that applies to Lady M as well.
I wonder where all those paintings are? When I look at Interiors' photos, I always find myself scouring the walls for something I recognise.
They must be somewhere! I do hope someone is treasuring them (Lady M's anyway).
What a strange thing! Were they stolen from your attic??
ReplyDeleteIt would be a very strange thing to walk into someone's house and see one of her paintings. (But what an excellent blog post!)
Most were stolen at college, either by fellow students or tutors. They simply disappeared!
DeleteWhat do you mean "stolen"? You misplaced them. And I shan't quote Oscar Wilde on the perils of being careless. At least nobody can accuse you of insurance fraud since, presumably, they weren't insured.
DeleteHas it ever occurred to you that the College cleaners/caretakers tidying up after the students thought they were disposing of rubbish? It happens. No joke.
U
Some may think of my work as 'rubbish', but others obviously thought they were worthy enough to steal. I imagine that they were 'hedging bets' just in case I became 'famous'. I didn't!
DeleteI hope you keep a close eye on the valuable painting market.
ReplyDeleteSotheby's have my number in case one turns-up!!!
DeleteI hope whoever has them has them hanging for their enjoyment. Lady Ms painting is full of colour. Very pleasing
ReplyDeleteWho knows. I hope you do recognise a painting one day.
The least we hope for is that someone somewhere is enjoying them.
DeleteGoodness me. Your college must have been full of rogues and villains.
ReplyDeleteI think all Art Colleges are the same.
DeleteAll art schools are the same. My work just disappeared after the degree show. Some was sold and delivered to buyers by me, some given away in time honoured student fashion, and the rest just disappeared. I like Lady M's painting. I don't know if it is buildings or not, but it reminds me of some of my skyscraper paintings. I have a fascination in painting them.
ReplyDeleteI just wrote the same thing above. We used to exchange work with each other, but most just vanished. Most of my degree show work disappeared.
DeleteThe head of the course came to my space and identified a painting he wanted and said he was having it and just took it. It wasn't on to ask for any money. I often wonder where it is now.
DeleteThat's a bit of a cheek, but quite flattering at the same time.
DeleteLady M's painting is beautiful. It would look lovely on any wall. I lived with art students one summer many years ago. One day, I discovered two discarded glazed clay pots in our rubbish bin outside. Clearly, my potter roommate wanted them out of her sight. I smuggled them into my room and took them with me when I left at the end of the summer. Each of them eventually broke. In some ways I was relieved when the final one was gone. Having them in my possession always made me feel a bit like an art thief even though they were "rescued" and not stolen.
ReplyDeleteMy college had a very well known Pottery dep't, and all their unwanted pots were put into a large box for anyone to take. I still have one or two. They usually had small faults, but nothing to worry about.
DeleteI love the colours in this.
ReplyDeleteIt was an interesting painting all round. I'm just sorry that the photo isn't better; it was taken from a slide.
DeleteI like this painting very much. The depth and angles are wonderful. The colors are great too. Lady M. should reproduce another painting from this photo. What are the dimensions? I love large pieces like this...
ReplyDeleteI think it was about 4ft by 4 ft; quite big. Unfortunately it was photographed from a slide held against the light; not ideal.
