Cheap, bland, tasteless, shop-bought Tomatoes. Totally inedible!!
Same Tomatoes sliced in half, fried in Olive Oil, slightly seasoned, absolutely delicious. A revelation.
We are all aware of how tasteless and unpleasant shop-bought Tomatoes can be at this time of year, but lightly seasoned and fried in olive oil they become delicious.
If that ain't alchemy, I don't know what is!
It works with green tomatoes too. Where's the bacon and black pudding?
ReplyDeleteI've just had a Bacon sandwich for my breakfast; I'm clean out of Black Pudding.
DeleteHeat and salt will do miracles with a lot of otherwise bland food.
ReplyDeleteApricots are another good example. Often very bland when raw, but when made into jam they completely change their character.
DeleteDefinitely Alchemy. I put my tasteless tomatoes on pastrami and cheese sandwiches.
ReplyDeleteI'm frying them, then leaving them until I need them later in the day. What a difference!
DeleteI love fried tomatoes, as were they also for my parents. I have carried on with the tradition.
ReplyDeleteThe transformation from horrible to delicious is quite amazing. I shall be cooking all of ours for a while.
DeleteThey look good too, the fried version that is.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly look more appetising than the raw ones.
DeleteOne of my ways with tomatoes is to cut them in half, put a spoonful of hoisin sauce on top of each one, followed by a good sprinkle of Lemon and Black Pepper breadcrumbs ( Waitrose) and roast for about half an hour..delish!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds even better. Hoisin often works miracles.
DeleteI had some of those tasteless toms last week …. they were awful. It’s amazing what heat and oil will do ! I think I made a pasta sauce with mine ! XXXX
ReplyDeleteThe only thing one mustn't do with them is to include them in a salad; RAW.
DeleteAlmost anything fried and seasoned correctly will be delicious ...
ReplyDeleteQuite right. It's that alchemy that does the trick.
DeleteMrs Pudding occasionally berates me for purchasing that kind of tomato but cooked they are fine as you suggest and so much cheaper than other varieties.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that even expensive Tomatoes can be totally tasteless.
DeleteSome varieties of fruit are better cooked...goes for apples pears and plums as well as tomatoes
ReplyDeleteApricots are always far better cooked.
DeleteEven market bought tomatoes are no better. Aldi has some larger than cherry size tomatoes still on a vine. You get eight per pack, nine if you are lucky and they are delicious eaten on their own as fruit.
ReplyDeleteSome Cherry Tomatoes can be very good, but they're growing them these days to look good and taste awful. I can't understand why they simply don't grow better varieties. All down to 'yield' I imagine.
DeleteGood to know, for next winter. Hopefully our tomatoes will be sun kissed and tasty in a few weeks. We wish.
ReplyDeleteI've just bought a couple of wall mounted planters for growing Tomatoes on our bijou terrace. The theory is that whilst we're away in the Summer, the Tomatoes will grow and be ready for our return. We'll see!
DeleteWe used to get beautiful Creole tomatoes in New Orleans when I was growing up. They were delicious! Nowadays tomatoes have no taste at the stores. I do agree that frying or broiling them with seasoning and oil does help... and I've found that the smaller tomatoes (cherry or other) seem to have more taste these days than the larger ones.
ReplyDeleteI always grew my own in France and they were superb. In recent years I've had problems with disease and have had to rely on my neighbour (who grows tons). There really is nothing to compare with outdoor grown, sun-kissed, Beefsteak, Toms.
DeleteYou have discovered magic. We also like ours grilled with a bit of parmesan or mozzarella cheese.
ReplyDeleteI agree, a few shavings of Parmesan on a grilled Tomato is wonderful.
DeleteI'm waiting for home grown tomatoes. Like you state, anything can be made better seasoned correctly. Your home grown tomatoes will be amazing seasoned as well.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing better than outdoor, home-grown, Tomatoes. Without question, the best fruit of Summer.
