Inclement weather.

You may be shocked to hear that the sun doesn't always shine here in Périgord, and unfortunately we are having several days of rain just when we really needed sunshine.

So, what is a chap to do?

Well the boys go off on their bikes or play Ping Pong, I retreat to my crossword book, Lady Magnon reads novels, and Kimbo goes off shopping for fine wines, Oysters, and other delights; of course.

We are doing our best to ensure the future of the oystermen of Oléron, the vignerons of Epernay, and the Goose breeders of just about everywhere.

Someone has to do it, and, anyway, what else could we do; our weather has been dreadful.

    1. They taste of the sea, and not much else; but somehow they are delicious.

    2. It's not letting-up; still chucking it down.

  6. I've never eaten oysters. The only thing I 'know' about them is that you shouldn't eat them unless there's an 'r' in the month, which I think means from September to April you can eat them without risk.

    1. I think the old adage of having an 'r' in the month is a bit passé. There are very vigorous controls these days.

  7. One of the few things I cannot bring myself to eat is oysters. Undoubtedly that is due to the fact that my maternal grandfather used to down them, whole, raw and dipped in raw egg with some Worcestershire sauce. It seemed one of the most pointless culinary experiences possible.

    1. I always eat them just as they are, no lemon, no tabasco, no nothing; as nature intended. My son prefers to adulterate them.

    1. I don't eat a lot, but I love them. It's the opening I don't like.

  9. Sorry to lower the tone, but oysters taste like 'snot' and I have never been able to actually swallow one. I have tried, honest.

    1. I'm not sure quite how to reply to this. You won't put me off.

    2. I wouldn't know what snot tastes like. I suspect the reason you can't face swallowing an oyster has more to do with its visual (non) appeal and everything you associate with that look. Anyway, thanks for that appetizing thought. Cro clearly a die hard.

  10. You live a great life. We don't have goose liver but we do get oysters and in fact were given a dozen or so the other day by a friend who dives for them. Don't love them but will eat them. raw with lemon juice seems to be the preferred way around here. With an ouzo

  11. I absolutely LOVE oysters but, if I have more than a couple I have terrible stomach ache .... I think it’s because they are alive and that happens to some people! I am so cross because I really love them. My sister had salmonella from oysters ... twice .... so she avoids them now !!
I think that everyone has rain ..... my friend is in Assisi and it’s raining there as well. XXXX

    1. Lady M isn't too keen, so we only have them when my oldest is with us. I just wish he'd come more often.

  13. Oysters! Yum. The very wise late Dame M told us to only ever buy oysters here when there is an 'r' in the month. Or was that to not buy them when there is an r in the month? The former, I think. What a shame the weather is not so good for your visitors. If it is any consolation, in this sunny land the rain is abosolutely pi...pissi, persistantly falling.

    1. Luckily it's not their MAJOR holiday of the year; they're off to Turkey in the summer. We do get good weather here, but it's never guaranteed during certain months.

  14. A shame. Our weather is the same, but no visiting family to be discommoded.

  15. I love oysters but won't risk them again after a nasty case or food poisoning. I'm fed up with this weather, I want a refund.

    1. You'd be unlucky to have another bad Oyster; I'd start eating them again.

Have you seen the forecast? The rain is starting again next week.

  16. Oysters are a big deal in this neck of the woods and I admit I only developed a taste for them in my 20’s. Mr P won’t touch them but he has learnt to shuck them for me and considers it his chivalric duty. Any which way is fine with me, but natural is best.

    1. Your own personal shucker; how well trained. I'm not good at it, but I get there in the end. I'm with you on the 'natural' bit. Far better.
