Lady Magnon thinks it's the start of a slippery slope; she fears I might become an old sop.
Last winter I consumed a bottle (over several months) of 15 year old Aberlour single malt, and I must say it was stunningly good. I'm not a drinker of spirits, but a wee dram of good quality whisky in front of the fire on a cold night is wonderful. I literally drink a thimble full, just for the flavour.
I've now bought a bottle of Singleton (nothing to do with Valerie) 12 year old single malt for this coming winter. I've not heard of Singleton, so my fingers are crossed. It looks impressive, so I hope I've made the right choice.
My late father enjoyed his whisky, but always drank 'blended'. If he was still alive I would buy him single malt; there is no comparison.
It will probably be broached just before Christmas, and with the amount I drink, it should last until April. I'm rather looking forward to it.
If anyone has tasted this 'Singleton', I'd be interested to hear your opinion.
I've never heard of Singleton. I'm with you on the Aberlour though. One of the best. We'll be opening a bottle this weekend. X
ReplyDeleteI am reserving mine for the winter. I'm hoping it will be as good as the Aberlour.
DeleteFirewater! Now with lots of ice and some Coca-Cola......
ReplyDeleteI prefer it as it comes; as nature intended.
DeleteNow then Cro, a Dufftown brew may be smooth and just right for a wee dram, but like it says on the bottle it's WHISKY. Foreigners from Ireland may well drink WHISKEY, goodness knows what the Japanese make and how they spell it. My OH looks longingly at bottles of the smokey stuff from the peaty watered Isles. E&OE.
ReplyDeleteOh my gawd, I can't believe I wrote that. I have corrected it at once. Thank you for pointing out my horror!
DeleteI don't know about the bottle, but every thing around it looks so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLots of flowers in the garden at present; most of them are from huge Lavatera bushes (behind bottle).
DeleteI have never had a taste of one which I found bearable (sorry) but the farmer's favourite was always Highland Park.
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about Whisky but a really good single malt is wonderful. As I said, I often just drink a tiny amount simply for the flavour.
DeleteI bought a bottle of The Singleton the year before last (chosen for being on offer at Waitrose), and all I can remember about it is that it was very good - mainly because I cannot limit myself to a thimble-full.
ReplyDeleteThe only single malt that I can give you an accurate description of is Laphroaig, mainly because it tastes like burning car tyres. A taste not easily acquired - or forgotten.
I have had a bottle of Laphroaig, and seem to remember it tasting very strongly of Peat. I rather liked it.
DeleteUsing the old adage of 'You get what you pay for'
ReplyDeleteThen my favourite single malt whiskey is a Bushmills 21 year old Black Label with a Madeira Finish which is very satisfying to the palate and the wallet.
I remember a friend of mine visiting the Bushmills distillery; he failed to return with any samples.
DeleteYou mean he enjoyed the taste too much and did not want to waste any on you !
DeleteProbably, but he was more diplomatic.
DeleteHubby is the same with a really good port, last from Christmas until the spring. Enjoy the contents of your bottle.
ReplyDeleteI tend to buy rather standard Port; most of which goes for cooking (that's what I'm assured).
DeleteSometimes it can be delightful to slip down the slope. I have only tasted whiskey once in my life and it burned. I tried a gin drink this year and with the right accompaniments, it wasn't bad.
ReplyDeleteLady Magnon is a G & T woman. She'd be lost without her little tipple.
DeleteI'm sure that you could never be an old sop Cro !!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't drunk whisky since I was carried out of The Red Lion in Holborn after drinking most of a bottle of Glenfiddich !!! XXXX
We've all done it; usually when we were 15 years old!
DeleteThe 'wee' dram of the Highlanders back in the day when l lived there in the 80's was Famous Grouse. l never saw a single malt., let alone tasted one.
ReplyDeleteThat was my late Father's favourite Whisky. He helped keep the Co going!
DeleteEuh... this bottle is the same as the one I bouhgt about 2 years ago! I am surprised! I never drunk whisky, our whisky used to make our "cocktail sauce", very much appreciated by our guests. A bottle of whisky lasts about 4/5 years. But wine... don't ask!
ReplyDeleteMine should last until Spring 2018. I only sip for the flavour.
DeleteNever took to whisky , nor rum , they burn
ReplyDeleteIn general I don't like spirits, but I make an exception for a good single malt.
DeleteEeeeh! Can't stand the stuff but I wish I did!
ReplyDeleteIt's very nice although I always add fizzy water. I do not hold with being told what to do with my drinks by Scots people.
