Knowing One's Onions, Part 2.

Yesterday I pulled my Onion crop; and I'm pleased to say that they look pretty good. I hadn't really paid them much attention since they were planted as 'sets', and they were now completely covered by weeds.

I shall leave them in the sun to dry-out for a few days, then trim them up a bit and store them in a corner of the studio (if I can find a free corner).

Again I grew my old faithful variety of Red Baron. They never fail me, and the flavour is excellent; perfect for Pissaladière.

The medicinal properties of Onions are well known; we should all eat a lot more.

I haven't weighed my crop, but I imagine I have between 25 and 30 kilos. They should see me through the winter.

    1. It's a type of French Pizza, made with caramelized onion, anchovies, and black olives. Delicious.

  5. They look excellent - I might have to ask my gardener to grow those next year. We've had a good crop with our white onions this year but they are a bit lacking in taste.

    1. I put them in a deep plastic dustbin, and hope for the best. But I dry them off well beforehand.

  8. Wow, fantastic results. I never had much success growing onions. I do OK with flowers, but have not had much luck with veggies of any sort. Tomatoes are just beginning to ripen and I just spotted my first courgette a couple of days ago.

  10. I'll try again Cro and hopefully spell things right this time.
I love red onions, they are so mild and delicious raw with good quality white wine vinegar and a little pepper - and lashings of butter and bread.

    1. Quite right. They're so much milder than the usual yellow ones, but with all the flavour.

  11. They've cropped well. I like red onions. Have got all my onions drying on a clothes airer in one of the tunnels.
