These days, with no Haddock's under cultivation, I have to rely on my best friend, and neighbour, José to grow a few extra Tomatoes on my behalf; which he is always happy to do.
His vegetable garden always seems to grow just two things; Tomatoes and Beans. Both are eaten fresh, but both are also bottled for the Winter months. No Courgettes, no Aubergines, no Onions, or even Potatoes; just Toms and Beans.
There is no comparison between shop bought and outdoor sun-ripened Tomatoes. People do say that all home-grown vegs are always much tastier than bought, but this isn't always the case. However, when it comes to Tomatoes it is 100% true.
The ribbed Tomato on the left (above) weighed-in at 700 gms.
Phew; wot a wopper, and totally delicious too!
What an unusual tomato..it looks like a giant grub or caterpillar.
ReplyDeleteWe've only eaten half the round one so far, but I bet the 'Giant Grub' will be even more delicious. They are SO GOOD. It'll be a nightmare returning to the tasteless shop-bought ones again.
DeleteThat giant tomato will give you and Lady M quite a feed. You've got a very good neighbour there. A pity you can't stay a little longer in your little french house.
ReplyDeleteAll our garden tomatoes this year had very tough skins. I peeled them all for salads and sauces. The ones at the market or the grocers didn't have much flavour this year and they had tough skins too. Something to do with the endless heatwaves I suppose
I have a friend who ALWAYS peels her Tomatoes. I've always thought it a bit obsessive, but maybe she has the same problem as you. Perhaps you both grow the same tough-skinned variety!
DeleteThose tomatoes look so tasty. Those in the supermarkets here are totally tasteless and watery - and the skins are tough. Each year I vow I'll try growing a pot or two and hope for an improvement, and each year I forget! The tiny cherry tomatoes seem to be the only ones with any taste, but the skins are still tough and they are fiddly to peel.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pity that Haddocks is no more - I enjoyed reading about your successes and occasional failures, with accompanying photos.
I can't tell you how much I miss Haddock's. It's been like having an arm cut off. I think anyone with even a tiny garden should grow a Tomato plant or two. The results are so rewarding.
DeleteMmm... two ripe tomatoes on a plate - perhaps with a little seasoning and a dash of olive oil. That's a great vegan dish.
ReplyDeleteWe ate vegan last night, with my infamous 'Compost Fry-Up'.
DeleteI bought some wonderful tomatoes at the local farmers market on Saturday, the taste of summer sunshine.
ReplyDeleteNothing like it. They make the others seem like cardboard.
DeleteThere’s nothing quite like the taste of sun-ripened tomatoes from a home garden. It’s great that José is growing them for you, especially since tomatoes from the store just can’t compare in flavor. That 700-gram ribbed tomato sounds like a real treat—juicy and bursting with flavor! It’s moments like these that make all the effort of gardening worthwhile. www.melodyjacob.com
ReplyDeleteI shall broach that big one at lunchtime today. It should last for at least 3 days; if not more!
DeleteThe juice that is left on the plate after slicing and eating MUST be consumed off of the plate. Tilt up and swallow....more heaven.
ReplyDeleteI always do exactly that. My wife says I'm a Pig, but I don't care!
DeleteCount me in ...oink , oink. It is So tasty though.
DeleteNothing on earth tastes better than homegrown tomatoes. Food of the gods!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Nothing better.
