The Repair Shop usually comes from Sussex's 'Weald and Downland Museum', but yesterday (for us) it came from The Brighton Dome.
We really had no idea what to expect, and made a point of not trying to find out. It would have ruined the surprise.
It turned-out to be a 'meet the craftsmen/women' type of show, with many of the main suspects on stage. Steve Fletcher and his sister Suzie, Will Kirk, Lucia Scalisi, and Kirsten Ramsay.
The first thing I said to Lady M, as we sat down, was "What do you think the average age of the audience is?" "About 60?" she replied. "More like 70 or 80" I said "look at all the grey or balding heads in front of us".
It certainly wasn't a show for a young audience.
Brighton was the first show of a nation-wide tour. The production team are based here, and several of the cast members live here, so a perfect spot to kick off. The Repair Shop barn isn't far away.
No Teddies were re-furred, no clocks repaired, and no smashed pots re-assembled, but we really enjoyed ourselves.
A great afternoon. It was raining slightly when we came out, so we made a quick dash for home.
If you're a fan of the show, you'd enjoy it. No point going if you're not. The theatre was packed!
I tried to understand with the help of Mr. Google what you were watching. I'm not sure I understood.
ReplyDeleteYou would have to know the TV show to understand. I'm sure there'll be an edition on YouTube. It's a good fun and feel-good, object mending, programme.
DeleteDid they talk amongst themselves? Did they tell jokes? Did they use the audience for the basis of the talk and take questions? How did it work?
ReplyDeleteThey mostly talked amongst themselves. The producer of the TV show acted as 'Chairperson', and asked different questions in turn. Which was your most difficult restoration? which was your best reveal? have you had anything you couldn't restore? Those sorts of questions. There was also a screen behind the team on which they showed 'best bits' etc.
DeleteWas Jay Blades there in his trademark flat cap talking about controlling and coercive behaviour? I hope not for your sake as it could have given Lady Magnon a few ideas.
ReplyDeleteNo. He's still on The Naughty Step.
DeleteHow lovely. I would have gone if I lived nearby. XXXX
ReplyDeleteYou could have come with us!
DeleteSounds like a great afternoon out.
ReplyDeleteYes, a fun afternoon.
DeleteHome restoration is major work. Plumbing is plastic. A friend did a restoration, and all the copper pipes were replaced with plastic.
ReplyDeleteI am told new construction is all plastic pipes. The plastic is hard wearing, and leaks are no longer an issue.
Plastic pipes, especially the flexible ones, are a real treat for the amateur plumber!!!
DeleteI think it’s coming to Chester
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how they'll keep-up the spontaneity, night after night. I imagine it will follow a similar theme everywhere they go. It was a fun afternoon.
DeleteHad I been there, I would have been in the audience. That show is a marvel.
ReplyDeleteI love the show too. It was a great idea.
