Work advances extremely slowly up at the barn, but at last the front steps are finished. To build, and finish, them took about 2 months; it should have taken one week at the most.
Anyway, the builder managed to adhere exactly to my original design, and I'm pleased to say they have the 'look' I was hoping for.
They'll mellow.
Both the plumber and the chippy have been this week to assess and give estimates, but we still await the electrician. It must be eating all those snails that makes them imitate their pace!
Next report in 2015/6 maybe?

You have been remarkably patient. They do look great, however.
France has its highest ever unemployment of 3.4 million, but try finding someone who'll do some decent work for you!
The steps looks very fine. What are they constructed from?…it is difficult to tell from the photo. It is not easy to get builders here either…..we need some coping put on top of an old wall, but it is too small a job for anyone to be bothered to even phone back, never mind come and see the job! They are all too busy building 2 or 4 houses on a plot where one old house has been knocked down!
They are basically concrete, with a smoothly rendered stone-coloured surface.
Very handsome - very grand for a rural French retreat too!
If you ever sell it, it could be used for one of those out-of-the-way car-hire companies - I mean that in the nicest way possible!
Rolls Royce hire, I presume!
Very modern looking.
I think finding quality workmen who show up on time is a worldwide problem.
They did a nice job and it looks very attractive.
The steps are another understated surprise; the building will be wonderful.
There is a real elegance to the design of those steps Cro - well worth waiting for.
Now they just need some large clay pots of geraniums. Very nice indeed.
One needs vision.
