With so many farmers going out of milk production, the countryside is beginning to look so much more interesting.
I've never liked either Holsteins or Friesians (the bog-standard black-n-white milkers), I much prefer to see regional cattle, living where they belong.
Now that my neighbour Claude has stopped milking, he too has gone native and now has a small herd of my favourite cow, the Blonde d'Aquitaine. Here they are just beyond my garden.
However, I did spot a couple of foreigners in amongst them. There's one Montbeliard, and one Holstein.
The Blondes are all youngsters, so maybe the two adult cows are there to give them a thick-ear if they misbehave.

Lady Magnon was blond when I first met her (she is Swedish).
Beautiful creatures - the fields behind us are full of Freisians with a couple of Guernseys thrown in - now they are really pretty - I don't think there is a local Leicestershire cow though!

They are beautiful girls. A man I know has a pure Jersey herd, which is rare in NZ. They are beautiful too and his girls produce the best butter and cream I have ever tasted.
Your blonde neighbors are truly lovely. Strangely enough when we drive along the National highway from our nearest city, Bloemfontein in South Africa (this is when we go home on holiday!), we pass a farm with Charolais cattle. Do you know them? My husband thinks they're bred in France. Great post.
Absolutely. And when I buy beef; I buy Charolais.

Thie is one of my favourite breeds too Cro but we rarely see them over here.
Highland and also Belted Galloway are both increasing in popularity over here - and both have delicious beef.
I have no prejudices. I like cows in all colors.
They are pretty. Holsteins are big rangy girls but they produce a ton of milk.
I liked the black and white cows. We lived on Chemin de la Pralay when we were first married. I enjoyed listening to the cows with their bells as they were herded down to the meadow.
