I've never liked plates, bowls, or jars, that tell me what I should be serving on them, eating from them, or storing in them.
Big bowls with PASTA written all over them, or cheese boards with CHEESE etched into the wood, are two good examples.
However, I've always liked beehive shaped honey pots with bee-topped lids, which I suppose are quite similar in a way (the above are not mine).
In fact, if I was a Honey eater (which sadly I'm not), the house would be overflowing with antique-ish bee-covered Honey pots. I can almost hear Lady Magnon giving thanks for Diabetes as I write.
I suppose I'll have to own-up, I do own an ancient pale blue enamelled flour bin with FLOUR written on the side, as well as a bread board with BRAED carved into it. We all have our faults; even certain wood carvers.

I have a small bowl with a lid that is made to look like a strawberry. I use it as a sugar dish.
We have several sets of plates that suggest what one should be doing with them; but not with actual words. We have Asparagus, Oyster, and Artichoke plates, all of which are occasionally used for the correct items.
Even worse, the animal feeding bowls with GOG, CAT, etc, emblazoned on them.
What about Tea/Coffee/Sugar canisters?
They're banned too!

When you stop and think about it ~ it's all a bit naff.
Worse would be, if the mug said MUG.
Even worse are the signs people place in their homes....EAT.......RELAX....THINK........
I have a mint sauce dish and saucer shaped like mint leaves that my mum always used so I have grown up with it and now have it here and use it myself without fail when we have mint, and it will be on the table tonight. Perhaps I will even photograph it. Nothing else gets put in proper dishes except I do use the cruet for mustard and mix it up properly from mustard powder.
Braed sounds like a medieval take on the word. My Cornishware tea and coffee jars have what they contain written on them. As they're identical it's jolly useful!
I believe the makers of such bread boards would spell a few wrongly on purpose, then charge slightly more for them to 'sophisticated' city folk who found it 'quaint'.
The very first antique I ever purchased was a blue tin cake safe with the word 'cake' stenciled on it. I've used it to store cookies for over 30 years. I'm old!
I have a set of cannisters with small patches of blackboard on the fronts. You can write on them with chalk. We keep dog treats in one of them; I wrote "good dog!" on the front!
I'm rather fond of my pasta bowls that have spaghetti, cannelloni,etc written all over them. And I used to have a toaster with toast written on the side.
agree up to a point Cro, although I do love those honey pots although I hate honey.

I suppose if they're all the same, then there's an excuse. If they were made of glass, there wouldn't be!
