  1. Thanks for the recipe. Mine is similar but it has grated apple. And a half pint of brandy or rum is a v necessary addition. I like her recipe. Shall make a copy

    1. That was quick! She always makes the same mix (you can see how well used the page is!), and it's always very good. The brandy is essential.

  2. Do you have to refrigerate it or can you leave it on the counter?

    1. I think she always puts in it the fridge, but that may be because of cats cogs and inquisitive children. Soon it will be decanted into huge glass jars, and taken away to a cupboard in the 'tower'. I imagine anywhere cool would do.

  3. Here's my recipe for mincemeat.

    Go to supermarket.
Buy a jar of Robertsons' mincemeat.
    Come back home.
    Job done.

    1. Just buy Supermarket ready-made pies. They're very good. I believe Tesco's on the Isle of Wight sell the best ones.

  4. I make an uncooked one too, using lots of my windfall apples. It lives in an old earthenware jar and when I took the lid off this week to use some in a Mincemeat Cake, oh my goodness, it is BOOZY!!

    1. The two best smells of Christmas are baking Mince pies, and roasting Turkey. I pray that I am never deprived of either.

  5. Christmas will be a lonely one for me this year - and for many like me. But I don't mind at all. Tomorrow I will order a complete Turkey dinner with all the trimmings from the farm shop where I buy my meals. It will be delivered, ready cooked, on the Eve and I shall enjoy it. I have so many happy memories of our Christmasses and of the farmer whose trick was the firing of the (home made) pudding with brandy every year and I have no desire to travel and contribute to spreading the virus.

  6. PS But I do like the look of Lady M's mincemeat - I can smell it from here!

    1. I have spent many Christmases with just the two of us, and one or two entirely by myself. I still had a good time, and enjoyed the freedom to do what I wished. Christmas doesn't have to be enjoyed en masse; I'm sure you'll have a very pleasant day.

  7. I feel that it's time Lady M applied to go on The Bake Off ..... she is so good at baking. I like cooking but I'm not so good at baking ..... probably because I love savoury food more than sweet. XXXX

    1. She's working on something in the kitchen as I write. I think she's making a Tarte Tatin; and maybe a few mince pies at the same time.

  8. My mom always made mince meat pies at Thanksgiving and Christmas for herself and her brother and sister. I was never a fan but my grandmother came from Ireland and i guess it was their tradition.

    1. The shops (in the UK) are full of them, but homemade are always best.

  9. I wasn't going to do any Xmas baking this year but I'm now having a rethink. Mince pies I've not done before but Lady M's recipe sounds too easy. Some years ago we got some fabulous mince pies from a butcher who did them in the traditional style with the meat/fruit mix. Not as sweet and like a little meal rather than a treat.

    1. I've never tasted the original ones that had both meat and fruit; these days it's fruit only. However, I can imagine the others being very good too.
