Car Tyres.

I'm not at all a 'petrol head', but I was shocked to see the size of the tyres on my son Kimbo's car. They are massive.

Having just last week changed all four tyres on my own car (The Compact Royce), I thought I'd have a butchers' online to see how much HIS would cost.

For decent tyres (Michelin) they cost €249.64 EACH. That's well over €1,000 for the four when you include fitting, etc; possibly even as much as €1,500.

Mine, however, cost just €129.68 for the FOUR tyres themselves, and a bit more for fitting etc, making a total of  €212.52. All four fitted, balanced, etc, for less than the price of ONE of his.

I am perfectly aware that the two cars hardly compare, but over a 'grand' just to replace the tyres does seem a tad excessive. I hope he looks after them!

  2. Tyres must be cheap where you live Cro. I haave a Corse, 2 door nippy little car - perfect for me. I had to have a new tyre because I went down a pothole. The one tyre cost me around £130.

    1. Mine must be extra cheap then, even though the Compact Royce is probably a tad bigger than a Corsa.

  3. He probably not get bogged anywhere with tyres that wide. Michelin tyres are very good and last a long time.

    1. I was shocked by how wide they are; almost tractor size.

  4. Funny how the word "retired" has nothing to do with putting new tires/tyres on one's vehicle.

    1. The clue is in the spelling. In the US it probably has a double meaning.

    2. You might be surprised how much you can spend on a bike.

As you said these types of cars are so much more than a means of transportation and getting from A to B.

    3. My youngest son has just recently bought 3 bikes; they cost a fortune.

  7. I have no idea of the price of tires but I do know that they are not cheap. My son owns a large Jeep. His tires are so big that he brings a step ladder for people (me) to get in and out of the car. I do not understand the need for such a vehicle, but he loves it and has a lot of fun driving it. He and his wife also have a small car for everyday driving.

    1. Those sorts are cars are more for fun than getting from A to B, the big fat tyres are all part of that fun.

  8. My Michelin tyres are pretty big too (235/45 R18 98Y) and are Cross Climate but only cost £180 each fully fitted and balanced.

  10. This reminds me of my mother driving an ex Army Humber staff car in the 1950s. People used to point at the tyres because they were so big. My Citroen takes tyres £40 each.

    1. £40 per tyre is plenty. One can almost judge a car by the cost of its tyres.

  12. When I had my Audi TT, the tyres were really expensive. They were really big and very heavy to drive. Now I have a mini, they have run flat tyres which are much cheaper and this mini is a John Cooper Works and is faster than the TT ! XXXX

    1. When I was a student I did furniture removals as a summer job. One of our clients was John Cooper, who we moved from just outside London to the south coast. I'd imagined his house would have been filled with memorabilia, but it wasn't. There were a couple of car pictures, and a steering wheel. All his other stuff must have been elsewhere.

  13. I have a small pickup truck and recently had to get new tyres. Mine were a bit on the pricier side of middle of the road, all weather types, although not considered extravagant. The four of them cost me close to €700. I do live in a place where we have snowy winters, but don't have to drive a lot, which is why I went for the all weather type, rather than do what many do here, i.e., have a set of snow tyres and a set of tyres for the rest of the year.

    1. I suppose the real off-roaders would have a second set of Tyres. Yes, expensive business having two sets.
