Pears not Pairs.

I love Pears, but rarely buy them. They are up there amongst my very favourite things to eat.

We have just two youngish trees; a Doyenne de Comice, and a Conference. Above are from the latter.

Conference is an especially good variety because it tells you when it's ripe; it turns yellow, and drops.

The old family joke.

Sprog: Daddy, may I have a pear?

Cro: A pair of what?

Sprog: No, an eating Pear.

Cro: Oh you mean a quarter of a pair of Pears! Yes of course you may.

Well we found it funny, and we still do!

  1. Are the two young pear trees the birthday trees of grandchildren?

    1. One of them is; the Doyenne de Comice. It's Finn's tree, but he's never here to eat the fruit. It's covered this year too!

  4. Family joke ... we all have them !!! I like a nice juicy pear but my favourite fruits are the Summer fruits ... strawberries, raspberries and peaches. The flat, white peaches have been particularly good this year. XXXX

    1. We have lots of Peaches at the moment. Not possible to eat them all. Everything comes at once, we also have loads of Apples, Figs, Quinces, and Grapes, etc. Still, better too many than too few.

  5. Why did the mushroom get invited to lots of parties?

Because he was a fungi to be with.

    1. I've not heard of that one. We do need more variety so I'll investigate. Thanks.

    1. I only ever eat our own home-grown Pears. I don't really trust too much fruit in the shops. Bananas are OK.

  8. I would like a pear tree, but one would not fit on our balcony. My childhood experience of pears from our tree is not good. They would like eating wood. At a young age I learnt the benefits of the green grocer shop.

    1. We have 2 different Pear trees. The ones above turn yellow when ripe, and drop off the tree, the other ones you have to pick them, and keep them for two weeks before eating. That woodiness eventually turns to soft flesh, and becomes delicious.

  9. Am I missing something? A quarter of a pair of pears is half a pear. Isn't that being a bit stingy?

    2. It was designed to confuse the children. A pair of pairs being four. There is no spelling in the spoken word.

    3. Yes but I come from Oop North (even though I do not have a northern accent) and pair and pear are pronounced differently: the former being more like something cats do. I could never understand why one shouldn't spur the horses if you wanted them to go faster. (As in 'Home James and don't spare the horses').

    4. In the deep south, Pair, Pear, and Pare, were all pronounced exactly the same. More economical.

  10. When i buy Pears at the market they are usually hard. So I slice them and sprinkle them with a bit of salt. Very tasty.

    cheers, parsnip

  12. I love pears too Cro but it is often so hard to get one over here just as it is ripe. The best bet is usually a Conference just kept in the fruit bowl until it is ready to eat. I like it with a small noggin of cheese.
