I can't remember when or where I acquired this poorly executed piece of stone carving, but I've had it for a very long time. It sits out in the garden slowly disintegrating.
I imagine it's an 'apprentice piece', as someone has also been practicing their lettering on the base.
The world is awash with such objects; anonymous, mysterious, and secretive.
This is realy interesting. Near my house there are a lot of ancient stons and walls and I always looking on the ground when I walk with the dog, may be I shall find something.( thank you for the comment in my blog. I googled her and it is interesting).
ReplyDeleteA cow you say - it looks to me like it could be any number of animals - the weathering has obviously rendered it anonymous. I have similar objects that I made when I took up pottery - maybe people in the future will wonder who made them.
ReplyDeleteI've always just presumed it to be a cow/bull; I think I'll stick with it. It makes life easier.
DeleteLooks like something you stole away from some Greek ruins!
ReplyDeleteIs it roman?
ReplyDeleteI've no idea.
DeleteIt's early Bath.
DeleteI rather like it Cro ….. let's say it''s naive … it sounds better than poorly executed !! I like all of the lichen over it …. I'd happily have it in my garden. XXXX
ReplyDeleteIt more 'garden' than 'indoors'.
DeleteI love pieces like this - forever a mystery.
ReplyDeleteIt looks very old almost as though it's part of a grave stone or something.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a similar piece; it wasn't quite so eroded, but it was a lamb (Lamb of God...) and on a grave. Yours does seem to be very old and I'd put it under a covered porch as it could be worth a million billion dollars.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about Lamb, maybe you're right. As for its value; I'm sure you're right!
DeleteThe mystery of objects, their sources, is something that continually fascinates. And consider the eons it took for this piece of stone to form.....
