Doppelgänger 3.

                                             Cro's tower.

                                   Sir Edwin Lutyens' tower.

I turned on my TV recently to be confronted by the very first episode of 'Rosemary and Thyme', and I was instantly struck by the location (if not by the programme).

It appeared to be a very large and magnificent country house by the English architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens.

I've always admired Lutyens' work; he not only designed every aspect of the house itself, but also every nook and cranny surrounding it. The inside, the structure, and the outside, all being of equal importance.

So I Googled images of Lutyens houses, but was unable to find the one that had appeared before me on the TV screen; maybe it wasn't by Lutyens after all!

However, I did find the above small folly which I thought might amuse; it did me.

(Any resemblance between Cro and Sir Edwin, is entirely coincidental)

  1. Ahh! Yours looks much nicer! What is its functionality - dovecote, icehouse, storage area? - I cannot guess any more possible uses.

I've also heard of Luytens and from my understanding he was regarded by his peers at the time as something of an 'eccentric' (I use the term in the best of thought) though best known for his manor houses, the Whitehall cenotaph and "Lutyens' Delhi" - New Delhi precincts in India.

    1. Our version is a Summer 'overfill' bedroom, and general storage area for the rest of the year.

  2. I hate to be picky, but is it possible to have a one-story tower?

  3. Did you build this tower - it looks like a real folly with beautiful views - lucky guests who stay in it.

    1. I built the bottom one. Its views are even better than Lutyens' poor imitation.

  4. I watch the aforementioned programme purely for the architectural value :) Nice tower Cro...we were looking at a tiny building in a field next to our son's school yesterday, wondering what on earth it was for, I love these folly type buildings, fantastic :)

  5. Yours has a warmer feel to it. The other, while pretty, looks like it might have bugs inside.

  6. I like yours better.

  7. I have loved yours from watching the foundations laid to the birds placed in their rightful spot, no comparison for me...just my opinion.
