Return to Blighty

We've now been back in Albion for a while; that Green and Pleasant Land, where we Brits never shall be Slaves.

Those polluting Dark Satanic Mills are now few and far between, our Coal Miners have unwittingly given us much cleaner air, and our High Streets have plenty of wonderful Vape Shops, Bookmakers, and Turkish Barbers.

OK, our government wants to be rid of farmers, and replace them with cheap housing estates, illegal immigrants, and/or Wind and/or Solar Farms. But we shall struggle on; it's in our nature!

Contrary to predictions, my big Sainsbury's store had not been stripped of bog rolls or baked beans, nor did I see trollies filled to overflowing with bottled water. In fact everything was as I left it just three months ago. Even the regular check-out ladies welcomed me back.

This may shock you, but I was extremely happy to be reunited with my favourite sliced, wholemeal, seeded bread. French baguettes are all well and good, but I do get a bit fed-up with them. A fried egg on a slice of TOASTED ENGLISH WHOLEMEAL BREAD is heaven on a plate.

I've said it before that my love affair with France is slightly fading. Not with our actual home, which I adore, but with France in general. I rather blame the EU.

Many years ago, a secretive decision was made in Brussels that much of Spain and S W France would be designated as 'Tourist Areas'; which they were. Now that the locals have all reaped the financial benefits of that tourism, and are driving big foreign cars, etc, they're beginning to rise-up against the very visitors who made them wealthy. The Spaniards are frightening-away tourists, and the lack of those imported Euros will no doubt soon begin to tell; it'll take a lot of work to tempt those tourists back. The countries gaining are Egypt, Turkey, Croatia, etc.

So, it's good to be back in our little bijou Brighton home. The Tomatoes growing out front are hopeless; they are tough-skinned and have little flavour. There are no Apples on the tree, but elsewhere my newly planted Herb Garden has done quite well. All of our 'annual bedding plants' died.

It's good to smell the sea air again.

It seems like every place has its advantages, and you know how to enjoy them. There's nothing like a fried egg on a slice of good bread...

Haven't got one. said...

You can't beat the smell of sea air. Beautiful.

You can't have a fried egg on a baguette, it needs to be flat.

In France we had the smell of wild-fire 'smoke' for much of our time there, now we have the smell of Ozone. Much better!

I think our trip to Zaragoza next week shall be our last European visit. The thought of those long EES immigration queues has put me off returning.

Good to see you back. But we no longer have check out cashiers at our Sainsburys anymore. They're a thing of the past. It seems that self service rules now.

Welcome back to England. Despite all our tribulations, there's nowhere I'd rather be.

Enjoy travel while you can. I remember thinking the grass was always greener on the other side. I went on a five day cheap package trip to Majorca when I was in my early twenties, with the intention of not coming back. Found a room in an apartment, but couldn't find a job, so came back when the money ran out. Not so easy to do that now.

Did you return aboard an inflatable small boat with a hundred other asylum seekers? And were you welcomed back by two hundred patriots wearing black face masks? How did the Romanian gangsters get your car on board?

Baguette or French bread/stick, are they the same, I don't know. Anyway, you can make a very quick and easy 'pizza' with a lengthwise slice of French stick.

They're trying to make it as difficult as possible to visit their countries.

I'm just back from shopping, and I had to demand that a cashier came to serve me. When I have lots of stuff I won't use the self service.

Me too probably, but it is raining.

Those were the days! All three of my children did their 'Gap Years', and all found work very easily, and paid their own ways.

It might have been cheaper, and we could have given a lift to some nice foreign 'hitch-hikers' at £1,300 each.

Yes; same thing. Everything has it's place, but a baguette with a fried egg doesn't really work; but it's perfect with Paté.

There's nothing quite like sliced bread. I've recently come to realise I'm tired of slicing dense greek loaves. Bought some very nice, not doughy white, sliced bread. It lasts longer in this heat and I can just grab as many slices as I want and close the bag
I've only recently found Jerusalem on YouTube and read the words. A stirring patriotic hymn, very out of date. The version I watch has Farage mouth open screaming that he'll never be a slave

I've just eaten some Sainsbury's sliced wholemeal bread for my lunch. It was delicious. I'm no longer a bread-snob; I now go for whatever tastes the best!

We felt very welcomed in Spain and Provence.

You were obviously in non-tourist spots. In some places the locals are becoming very nasty.
