Victorian Tiled Steps

These lovely old tiled front doorsteps are from a terrace opposite the church; just down the road from where I live. Several of the houses have exactly the same pattern

As you can probably see from the photo below, some are in a pretty poor state of repair (this isn't the worst).

One of them was really falling to bits, and I was very pleased to see recently, that a man was totally re-tiling it. I stopped for a chat, and told him how impressed I was with his workmanship. He had re-tiled the entire flight of steps; top to bottom.

Each small black and white square is individual; these are not interlocking bigger tiles all put together. The time and effort in creating the finished effect is extraordinary.

And here, below, is the finished job. Real craftsmanship.

I was about to photograph it, and he told me to come back in an hour, as he was about to grout it. He wanted me to see it in it's full finished splendour! And here it is....

You really would think they were the original Victorian steps; nice job!

What a difference. He's a master tiler. It makes a lovely entrance.

I was amazed to find that there was still someone out there who did such work. He also appreciated my appreciation.

A superb job. Let us hope he gets plenty of more work. It's worth creating a flight of steps going from nowhere to nowhere,

It really is. Even better close-up!

He also stroked Billy as I was talking to him; another tick against his name (which I don't know).

Lovely job....those Victorians liked their tiles didn't they!

Both inside and out. They are always remarked about as being an important feature by estate agents!

He was, and he deserved it.

It's so good to witness such craftsmanship.

That fellow has done a grand job and I bet he was chuffed that The Lord of the Manor stopped to praise his work. I sincerely hope that he doffed his cap.

He genuflected; as one would expect. Nice chap!

Very nice tile work, it will last for 100 years with a little care. I insisted on a 2 by 2 tile floor in by shower room when I had the room redone, old fashioned small tiles the way bathrooms should be done.

I also like small black and white tiles and we changed the tiles in our family bathroom and downstairs loo to small black and white tiles. Laying a tile floor in a bathroom isn’t difficult - we did it ourselves but I wouldn’t want to tackle those outside steps.

A work of art. You made his day.

That is outstanding work. The black and white is classic. I also like the way he framed the stairs with white vertical and horizontal lines. I'd hire him in a heartbeat.
Doesn't it make you want to have some nice new custom tile work done by a masterful expert?

It's good to have work done by small artisan builders, etc. It keeps skills alive.

Those white strips at the front of the steps are white marble, just as they are in the originals. It's all beautifully done.
