I fancied some Fish Fingers for supper, but there were only TWO left in my freezer. Not enough!
Inside the freezer cabinet at Sainsbury's there were two very similar looking packets, which I'd not noticed before. One was for Cod Fish Fingers (the type I had at home), and the other was for Pollock (which I'd never previously tried). They could easily have been confused.
As I'd heard Rick Stein going on about how we should all be buying Pollock rather than Cod (to save Cod fish stocks), I plumped for the Pollock, which were also considerably cheaper; I think less than half the price.
I fried them in the same pan, but kept them apart. As above; the Cod was on the left and the Pollock on the right.
Frankly, taste-wise, I could hardly tell them apart, I had to really concentrate on finding any difference. If anything, I found the Cod to be very slightly 'sweeter', but overall they were much the same. Both very nice.
I served them with some simply fried 'Little Gem' lettuce.
Verdict: Pollock Fish Fingers, 10/10. I shall certainly be buying them in future!
I'll leave the Cod to swim another day.

I wonder how the relative habits of both compare? I know that the cod are called bottom feeders, ie from what would be called ground level if it wasn't underwater!!
I have no idea. I think they are both very similar. They certainly look, and taste, very similar!
A good substitute then.
Ahh fish fingers. I haven't had them in years. The grandchildren loved them when they were little as do all small children I believe. With dollops of ketchup.
They are very expensive here but I shall have a look at today's prices. I doubt if they've gone down but there may be a cheaper alternative. I'd never thought about what fish they were made from. I presume here it is cod. We shall see.
I will enjoy them, wihtout the ketchup
Very much so, and far cheaper. They were very nice.
I've not had cod other than from the fish and chip shop in ages, we are always trying different fish.
I hardly ever eat Fish Fingers, but I love them. A Fish Finger sandwich with lots of Ketchup or Mayo is a real treat.
In France I buy bags of frozen Hake, which is really nice. It's a fish that holds-together well, so can be used for all sorts of things!
A wise choice.
I shall buy more on Saturday. I'm a convert!
Freshly cooked cod filet is excellent. I've tried fresh pollock and prefer the cod. I might not tell the difference between the two fish fingers, especially if slathered with mayo.
It would be a very different taste test to compare fresh Cod with fresh Pollock. I expect the difference would be much more pronounced.
