I last saw this chap on October 10th, I saw him again yesterday morning at 5.30 am; I presume it's the same one.
It is very reassuring to see that Hedgehogs are living here again. About a week ago I disturbed another much smaller one in a nest up at the barn, when I uncovered my big pile of kindling wood (old weatherboarding planks).
Seeing as he seems to be resident very nearby, I have now made him a nest from an old broken terracotta pot, filled and covered with leaves (above). If he finds it, it will make the perfect spot for him to hibernate for the winter. Yes, I used to watch Blue Peter!
It is now well covered again (below), and I will add more leaves as they fall. Nice-n-cosy.
Those leaves are wonderful colours. Relating to your previous post we had a delicious salad today of raw grated beetroot and carrot with pieces oforange and some raspberry vinegar.
ReplyDeleteSounds perfect. Beetroot and Orange go very well together.
DeleteI enjoy seeing those Tiggy Winkles. They are few and far between here. I hope this one finds his new home. It does look cosy
ReplyDeleteThey are very appealing little creatures, I love to see them in the garden.
DeleteHere under the door at the entrance lives a family of hedgehogs, since the cat Edmund is not here they do not come to eat in the evenings.
ReplyDeleteWe used to feed the Hedgehogs with Cat food; we don't any more!
DeleteI do hope he finds his new nest. It looks very cosy.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too. I did my best for him.
DeleteGood job, Cro. You can polish your Blue Peter badge with pride.
ReplyDeleteAll those wild-life tips from the 60's have begun to pay-off. 'Down Shep'.
DeleteWhat cute little animals they are. We don’t have them here, but I have seen them in zoos. We have plenty of raccoons though, that are also cute, but oh, what a mess they can make if they get in your trash.
ReplyDeleteHedgehogs are very secretive creatures, they only come out at night to look for slugs etc. They are the gardeners best friend. I can't think of anything bad to say about them.
DeleteWe always had one or two on the farm but here my garden is steep with steps so don't think hedgehogs will come by.
ReplyDeleteThey need easy access, so I suppose their terrain is limited.
DeleteHedgehogs roam around my garden all day although I haven't seen any for a month so I assume they have hibernated. The cats don't take any notice of them.
ReplyDeleteBilly just sniffed at the one above, then moved on.
DeleteHedgehogs are lovely creatures....in the right place. One the Islands they were introduced with disastrous results as they decimated the ground nesting seabirds by eating their eggs.
ReplyDeleteI was told that Nightingales build nests at ground level; maybe this is why I haven't heard one for several years.
