Rough Sketching.

Having seen some of Rachel's recent townscapes, I thought I'd re-post this page from 2011.

All trained painters treat their drawings differently; our training gives us the confidence to scribble away as we like, without paying too much attention to the final look of the work.

I love going out with just a pen, brush, and sketch pad, and recording things in my own particular (peculiar) way. I never worry about drawings being 'good', or even necessarily accurate. It's just being there, looking at something, and jotting it down, which is fun.

These three sketches of a nearby town were done over a period of several weeks, I think I drew almost every inch of the place......

..... including the little back streets. Nothing special about them, but in this one I remember that I rather liked the old 2CV van, probably more so than the buildings.

  1. Lovely all three! I've enlarged them and I love the twigs of trees here and there, the chair too.

    1. The first car I bought here was a blue 2CV; not a van though.

    1. Between 12 and 2 pm all you can hear is the sound of knives and forks on plates. No-one in sight. It's much the same the rest of the time too.

    1. The tall building in the second drawing belongs a to a good friend and neighbour. I might frame it, and give it to him. Good idea!

  8. I expect you are not the only person fond of any 2CV. Your drawing is recognisable as such a car.

  11. When my father died we found several of his pencil sketches. My sisters wanted his finished artwork which we divided up, but I wanted the sketches even more. Their rawness I believe, was his best work, that which was essentially, my dad. Love these sketches Cro. They are of great depth and I see something new each time I look.

    1. It's the spontaneity which is essential in drawing. Sitting down, having a good look, then jotting it down. No time to be pretentious.

    2. I am giving these words to my group to encourage them to free themselves up a bit in their approach to drawing. You summed it up here nicely,

    1. I wish I could say the same, but I very rarely sketch these days. I'm just too busy.

    2. They both read your post intently. They had a good chat about it. Both say thanks. I am useless at drawing so was not part of the conversation. Thanks.
