Now you see it; now you don't.
It's not as if I have a shortage of pocket knives, even mushrooming knives; but I couldn't resist buying this brass inlaid Laguiole knife at our local 8th May market yesterday (the day the French won WW2).
As soon as I'd bought it, Lady Magnon thrust it's purchase price into my palm and took it away; she claims it will reappear (if she can find it again) in July as my birthday present.
What very good taste she has!
Now I have to forget all about it until my birthday.
The knife has a certain look about it that is attractive even if I don't collect/carry knives. Is that a brush on the end to clean the mushrooms? Quick thinking on Lady Ms part. Solved a big problem.
I have a French mushrooming knife with a brush on the end too. It also has a row of brass strips set in the handle at one centimetre intervals, presumably for measuring the diameter of caps. I never use it.
I think I might copy Lady M's method. Buying a present for anyone gets harder as the years go on. What better than to give you something you chose yourself (even if there is a slight delay!)?

Optimistic Cro!
The difference between an optimist and a pessimist, is that the optimist enjoys himself whilst waiting for the inevitable! I AM that optimist!
This is a daily, optimistic, 'photos and comments' blog. I make no judgements (only occasionally), just notes. If you wish to comment in any way at all, please feel free. Everything and everyone (except the obdurate and dictatorial) is very welcome.
I was born just south of London, but for the past 50 years I've lived in S W France. I am a painter by profession, and writer by desire. Lady Magnon and I live between an ancient cottage in a tiny village in perfectly tranquil French countryside, and a bijou townhouse in Brighton UK. In France we have plenty of fruit trees, all situated amongst a view that takes the breath away, in the UK we have a handkerchief sized patio. We also have a Border Collie called Billy. I try to treat our planet with respect, and encourage others to do likewise (without preaching).
Contentment is a glass of red, a plate of charcuterie, and a slice of good country bread. Perfect!
Very nice Too.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't resist. Now I have 21 pocket knives, instead of the previous 20.
DeleteHave never seen mushrooming knives here.
ReplyDeleteMaybe NZ'ers aren't so fanatical.
DeleteDoug says he didn't know there was another idiot who collected pocket knives. He just counted 33.
DeleteNot sure how many I have, but slightly less than 33 I think.
DeleteThe knife has a certain look about it that is attractive even if I don't collect/carry knives. Is that a brush on the end to clean the mushrooms?
ReplyDeleteQuick thinking on Lady Ms part. Solved a big problem.
Yes, but the brush is hardly ever used. It also has a measure on the back, but why one would want to measure a mushroom, I'm not too sure.
DeleteLady M is very clever.
ReplyDeleteSneaky, I'd call it.
DeleteVery smart. Don't forget to look surprised when you open your gift in July.
ReplyDeleteIf she ever finds it again.
DeleteShe should make your present something else - then you would REALLY be surprised!
DeleteI'll be really surprised if she finds it.
DeleteEvery gardener should have a knife like that. I collect old brass and copper kettles.
ReplyDeleteI have a nice old Aluminium Kettle that I still use on our woodburner; not quite the same as Brass or Copper.
DeleteMad.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I said!
DeleteThey won the war?
ReplyDeleteYou mean you didn't know?
DeleteWill it be mushroom season there in July? Whatever will you do with it otherwise?
ReplyDeleteWhenever we get a really good downpour it's mushroom season, so you never know. August is usually good.
DeleteI have a French mushrooming knife with a brush on the end too. It also has a row of brass strips set in the handle at one centimetre intervals, presumably for measuring the diameter of caps. I never use it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why anyone would want to measure a mushroom; weigh it, yes.
DeleteI think I might copy Lady M's method. Buying a present for anyone gets harder as the years go on. What better than to give you something you chose yourself (even if there is a slight delay!)?
ReplyDeleteSneaky. She really pounced on it. I wasn't even allowed to photograph it; I had to use a Google image.
DeleteYou and your knives are a worry.
ReplyDeleteIf you live out in the country you need them. I always have one in my pocket; the others are 'spares'.
DeleteWin win there for you both. You get what you want and Lady M doesn’t have to scratch her head trying to figure out what to get you for your birthday.
ReplyDeleteA true partnership!!
DeleteI don't think I have got that sort of self control.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't too happy about it, but she insisted.
DeleteLovely inlay. Don't lose your claim ticket.
ReplyDeleteI've carved a stone tablet, 'It's in her jewelry box'. I just hope she doesn't move it.
