Britain's most famous dish.

Ask any foreigner 'What is Britain's most famous dish?', and they will invariably reply 'Fish and chips'.

It's years since I've had pukka chip shop 'Fish-n-chips'. We do have fish and chips every Friday, but it's either fresh Salmon or Fish Fingers with a few oven ready potato wedges.

However, we decided recently to spoil ourselves, and Kimbo picked-up enough for three at our nearest chippie.

It was particularly good. Not too greasy, plenty of chips, and a good sized piece of Cod. Delicious.

I think next weekend we might have a Chinese! I've been really looking forward to a Chinese take-away for ages. I think we've now found the right place.

  1. Mouth watering good! You just can't it quite right at home. LIDLs now have bags of frozen fish and chips which are cooked in the oven. They're not bad but not like yours at all I'm very sure.
Glad it was an enjoyable meal .
Chinese? Wouldn't mind one of those meals either. Not cooked by me

    1. I do a reasonable imitation of a Chinese meal, but it's nothing like the real thing. Roll-on next weekend.

  2. Your passion for food is contagious. Now I would be happy for such a dish of fish and chips.

    1. It was really nice. Being by the sea, we should have it more often.

  3. As I now have to avoid fats and wheat products (no batter or crumb) I have had to adapt my Friday fish and chips. Cod fillets from the local fishmonger baked in lemon juice and parsley with mixed seeds sprinkled on top for crunch, served with green beans instead of chips (P of course has proper full fat chips).
Oh but I do miss the real thing.

    1. I'm very fond of fresh Salmon, lightly fried in butter, and still pink inside. That and a few McCains is one of my favourite meals.

  4. I wonder if the political leaning of the newspaper they are wrapped in has an bearing on the flavour and enjoyment factor!
A local hotel, run by Norwegians, does the most delicious, "proper" English fish and chips. It's one of the most popular meals on their extensive menu.

    1. I'm afraid that the traditional newspaper wrapping was banned years ago, it's now brand new plain white paper. Good quality Fish-n-Chips is popular everywhere, especially eaten outdoors out of a bag, by the sea!

  5. I am frankly astonished that you didn't have mushy peas with your fish and chips. Another point I must make is that when a meal is finished the knife and fork should be placed side-by-side to the left of your plate. Surely they taught you this at King's Ely.

    1. We were very radical at school, and do remember that I've lived in France for 50 years, hence my relaxation, and use of my Opinel.

    2. Thanks for this. I could have got in trouble parking my eating irons on the right. There's so much to learn since I joined Us Labours.

    1. I believe that foreigners always think of Fish-n-Chips first. I also believe that the UK's favourite dish is Jalfrezi Curry.

  9. I much prefer fish & chips to eating out in a pub/restaurant, you can't go wrong with fish & chips. Yes, and Chinese sounds good next week, I hope you'll take a picture for us!

  10. We love fish n chips too... dad loved vinegar on his/I prefer lemon (also fresh salmon cooked with butter and garlic for a few minutes in the oven). Have never been a fan of Chinese... although chicken fried rice is pretty good.

    1. I like the old fashioned style Chinese restaurant dishes. Sticky ribs, Spring rolls, Sweet-n-Sour Pork, etc. These days Chinese restaurants tend to be more trendy, which isn't what I want.

  11. I also love fish and chips. Deep fried fish (cod) is always best at a restaurant overlooking the sea.
