Sunday Lunch

It's such a pleasure popping down to my 'local' again, The Caxton. It's a tradition that has been sorely missing for some while.

Reputation had it that they now do a stonking good Sunday Roast. There were three Sunday Specials on offer, Beef, Pork, or Lamb; we of course had some of each.

I plumped for the roast Beef. Perfectly cooked beef and plenty of it, a good variety of veg', and a Yorkshire Pud'.

All washed down with a couple of bottles of Merlot, and finished with some sticky, peanut buttery, cheesecake.

Not cheap, but we'll be going again.

  1. There are a few cosy Weatherspoon pubs in Brighton that offer excellent value for money but The Caxton Arms sounds better. You could reduce the Sunday lunch bill by saying, "Oh, I think we'll just have tap water today - we are not in the mood for alcoholic beverages".

    1. I think my oldest might have a word to say about that. A glass or two of wine with Sunday Lunch is ESSENTIAL.

  2. That's the best way to spend a Sunday! Eat a good meal that someone else has cooked, served and cleared up. You are really loving getting into English life and customs. I guess you're very happy you had to return

    1. Yes, I was previously cursing about my move, but in fact we're loving it.

  3. And after the wine you could walk home.

    1. Our house is only about 50 metres away. We managed to find it.

  4. While it seems odd to have a large meal mid afternoon, there is nothing quite like an English Sunday pub meal, and we found them quite cheap to the point where I could not understand the economics of such great meals at the price.

    1. I like my main meal of the day to be in the evening. Lunch does me no good, I fall asleep (if allowed) and it ruins my day. The meal did seem expensive, but I suppose it was only about £35 each, which isn't enormous. I'm not used to such things.

  6. The perfect Sunday lunch. Our son cooked us roast beef, yorkshires, Savoy cabbage and shallot gravy …. It was delicious. A pub Sunday roast is also good but, our children cooking it is cheaper ! XXXX

    1. No washing up, of course. Yes it wasn't cheap, but every day is Christmas Day when Kimbo's here with us. We always feel like pushing the boat out.

    1. And my poor son had to then drive back to London (he hadn't drunk much).

  8. Your pub has a very good menu. Everything sounds delicious. The convenience of having it just down the street is wonderful.

    1. It would be better if it was more 'affordable', but I'm sure we'll return for more.

    1. It's a lovely old Pub'; quite small inside, but a lovely atmosphere. The bar staff are all young and attentive, the perfect 'local'.

  11. I have often read about cosy English Pubs and their delicious Roast lunches. It makes me want to visit England. I vaguely remember Yorkshire puddings, we lunched with an English family many years ago when I was about eleven and the mum had made Yorkshire puddings, which I remember I loved, but have been unable to replicate in spite of trying.
