I've hardly found any mushrooms this Autumn; it's Lady M who's become our 'Gatherer in Chief'.
Invariably when I've been out hunting for Hedgehog Mushrooms (below), I returned empty handed. When Lady M goes out, she returns with a bag full. These, below, we had for lunch a couple of days ago.
The following day we both went together to where she said there were 'loads'. Below is what she then found; again I found nothing.
I shall have to return to 'Hunters and Gatherers College'.
There is always a retort to that in this country - 'you should have gone to spec-savers' but I am sure it is just the luck of the draw or instinct on the part of Lady M.
ReplyDeleteI think it's more that I look in the wrong places, although Lady M might dispute that.
DeleteMany years ago a friend gave my husband some mushrooms that he had gathered in the woods. I wasn't going to touch them, but P was looking forward to them ..... the next morning our friend phoned to say DON'T EAT THE MUSHROOMS!! Just in time.
ReplyDeleteNever trust eating anything you don't know is edible and good. We only eat about 5 varieties that we eat regularly. There are others that we know are edible, but we leave them alone. The Hedgehog Mushrooms (above) are very good.
DeleteIndeed, lost your touch, as simple as that. Lady M fresh and full of vitality to go out and search and find.
ReplyDeleteMind you; she's been well trained!!
DeleteRather than returning to 'Hunters and Gatherers College', you should visit Specsavers.
ReplyDeleteOh. I see that Thelma got there before me with that one.
DeleteIn fact you're probably right, I must have my eyes tested one day soon; not that I think it affects my prowess at mushroom hunting.
DeleteI am imagining you now as a mushroom hunter stalking the forest with your camouflage outfit and wide brim hat, brandishing a very sharp knife.
ReplyDeleteSharp knife (unused), old Barbour, gumboots, plastic bag (empty).
DeleteThat's a relief to know the mushrooms haven't gone the way of the dodo. It was just you!
ReplyDeleteMy prowess will return; maybe next year.
DeleteLuckily Lady M. has not lost her seek and find ability. Your photo shows a good find.
ReplyDeleteShe's become a magnet for them this year, and is now a keen mushroomer.
DeleteYou’ve just been unlucky and took your mushroom gathering walk in the wrong direction !!! You will find so many mushrooms next year, you’ll be sick over the sight of them !!! XXXX
ReplyDeleteNext year even my Tomatoes will grow! My fingers will be permanently crossed.
DeleteLucky you have Lady M. A good haul
ReplyDeleteMany of them replaced 'ordinary' mushrooms in last night's Coq au Vin. Delicious.
DeleteJust be thankful Lady M. is willing to share her bounty. We had a very good mushroom year up on the mountain. The Shiitake have been especially plentiful.
ReplyDeleteLucky you, it's been a dreadful year here. Not enough rain; although why I would complain about that, I don't know!
DeleteMy plan for this summer is to innoculate some oak logs and grow shiitake mushrooms. I've got the perfect place for them.
