I'm a newcomer to Levi Roots' Reggae Reggae Sauce, but I've been aware of it ever since Mr Roots first appeared on TV's Dragon's Den.
Hot Chilli sauces come and go, some are good, others not so good. Some of the best I've had come from the Byron Bay Chilli Co in Oz.
I thought it was about time I opened my new bottle of X-Hot, so, as I'd BBQ'd a few strips of Belly Pork last night, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Verdict: It tasted like standard ketchup with added chilli, and was far too hot. He makes two other types that are less fiery. I cannot understand the bravado of eating very hot foods or sauces. A hint of Chilli is nice; leaving your mouth stinging is not.
The Pork (which we ate with my first picking of red Kale) was delicious.
I apologise for the messy picture!
I wish I could mail you some of our local hot sauces and pickles. There are several good ones that I think you might enjoy...
ReplyDeleteMy favourite (Aussie) hot sauce is The Byron Bay Co's Green Jalapeno, Coconut, Coriander, and Mango' sauce. Stunning. I'll have to visit S Carolina to do a taste test!
DeleteOh, please do! I would absolutely love to be your tour guide!

DeleteNothing messy about that picture.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't wearing my 'Food Designer' hat.
DeleteI don't use chilli in any food I cook having had a long ago experience when I over did the chilli and nearly burnt the roof of my mouth off!
ReplyDeleteAs I said above, I just don't understand the appeal of REALLY HOT things. I like the flavour of Chilli, plus a bit of heat; no more.
DeleteThe knife was not well positioned for me. X-hot type sauce names put me off in the first place because they are saying something that sounds made up or OTT for the sake of it.
ReplyDeleteI've got 2 more still unopened. Chilli Willies 'Aussie ring stinger', and a Byron Bay 'Smokin mango chilli sauce'. Both are described simply as 'hot'. They will probably be less so than My Root's sauce. Yes, the photo was a disaster.
DeleteI like a bit of spice but I'm the only one around here though up north they eat hot when it's cold. Can't take anything fiery either. For a start you can't taste the flavor in your food if the sauce is too hot.
ReplyDeleteThat's right. It all ends-up as bravado.
DeleteI am not a chilli fan Cro, although I do like sweet chilli sauce.
ReplyDeleteI bought some sweet chilli sauce once; it was far too sweet, and was thrown away. Each to their own.
DeleteI LOVE food, am not fussy and will try almost anything { although sheep's eyeball's and guinea pig don't really appeal !! } BUT ...... I just can't get on with hot food. A doctor once told me it has something to do with the lining of your mouth .... I can't drink fizzy drinks quickly either.
ReplyDeleteSo, I'm afraid that hot things aren't top of my list ! I don't mind a small amount of chilli but that's as far as it goes !! I feel a bit of a failure in the hot and very spicy food department but I guess we all have a few things that we don't get on with. XXXX
I like spicy foods (curries, etc), but there's a limit to 'hotness'. I don't want any food of mine to be painful.
DeleteI was looking at a bottle of that the other day and was tempted but decided not to. So glad I didn't after your review! I too like to taste the food without having to gasp for a cold drink every 30 seconds.
ReplyDeleteHe does 2 other ones that are less dangerous. Just avoid the X-Hot one.
DeleteTalking of 'Hot'; I think this has been the hottest day of the year. It's stinking out there!
ReplyDeleteAnd here.
DeleteI not a fan of those super hot sauces.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I wondered if you'd seen that ska man Prince Buster has died? I just saw an obit in The New York Times.
Best wishes.
Yes, very sad. He was one of the first big stars of Ska that I went to see back in the mid 60's.
DeleteThat pork looks scrummy. I like just a subtle hint of chilli.
ReplyDeleteThe Pork was very good (even if it looks messy); the red Kale was slightly chewier than I was hoping.
