The REAL Christmas

It's Christmas morning, around 5.30 am. I've grabbed a bacon sandwich, posted my day's blog, and then consulted my 'logistics' list. On the very top was 'Lay Table', and 'Prepare Sprouts'.

Then; make Stuffing, make Pigs-in-Blankets, peel a few Potatoes, get the Sauce started (with giblets), and finally prepare the Turkey. Breathe deeply. Take Billy for a walk.

En route for the park we meet two Fox Cubs (shy one out of picture). Billy looks at them for a while, exchanges secret Canine patois, then wishes them a happy Christmas. The park is almost empty. I liberate a couple of sprigs of berry-less Holly, and head for home. Back indoors it's warm, and already smells Christmassy.

The exchanging of gifts is, of course, a vital part of Christmas, so when our guests have arrived, we open Champagne (of course), eat Smoked Salmon and Caviar on Ritz Crackers, then make a start on the huge pile of presents that are clustered beneath our piss-poor excuse for a tree.

In between time, I am rushing around betwixt the sitting Room and the Kitchen, trying to keep an eye on the timing of Turkey, Sprouts, Spuds, Sauce, Stuffing, etc.

Christmas isn't Christmas for me without 'Carols from Kings'. We were out on Wednesday night so I have had to watch it on iPlayer. Wonderful as usual. I noticed a surfeit of 'Asian' choristers this year. I wonder why?

We sat down to eat just after 1 pm. All went well, and our Tummies groaned. Far too much of everything; but that's what it's all about.

Only 364 days to go, and we'll do it all again (if we're saved). I love it. It's my favourite day of the year.

  1. Well done on successfully achieving the feat of cooking another Christmas dinner. Bringing it all together at the right time is a kind of hocus pocus. I hope you treated yourself to a small dry sherry.

    1. I treated myself to several. Too much food and too much booze; I didn't sleep well last night!!!

    1. I hope so. It's a shame that it's all over so quickly.

  3. I always liked Carols from Kings until one year the sun was beating down through the church windows and I read it was filmed in July. Should have known it wasn't live .... somehow spoiled it for me. I too ate too much yesterday and spent last night trying to sleep, sitting up.

    1. It is filmed in early December, not July. If you want the live version you need to tune in at 3:00pm to Radio 4 to listen to A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. That is the live version - it is still on BBC Sounds if you want to catch up.

    2. I HAVE to watch the TV version. Having spent so much time in a cathedral, just a few miles away, I love to see all the choristers, and admire the fan tracery of the roof. I'm also very critical of the singing!
