Our signal (above) from France's own wonderful 'ORANGE' internet and phone service (when, or if, it actually worked) was getting around 1Mb/s. Absolute rubbish, for which I was paying about 70 Euros a month. They should have been ashamed of themselves.
Since changing to Musk's 'STARLINK' we now get around 300 Mb/s, and there is no wavering in the quality of service we receive. It's brilliant, and we are paying about 40 Euros a month.
So, GOODBYE to Orange. August 15th is not only the French National Holiday, it's also the day we found our internet FREEDOM. As from today we have no landline phone (which was crackly and useless), but instead we have internet of the same quality as we have back in Brighton, from BT.
Since internet connections are now available everywhere by satellite, I can see Orange going bust very soon. People don't use landline phones any more, and people won't tolerate the appalling Orange internet service. Good riddance to them!
Le Quinze Aout will forever be a day of celebration in the Magnon household.
Viva Starlink; and viva Musk (but I wouldn't buy one of his cars).
Great that you now have a good connection with the outside world.
ReplyDeleteIt was so frustrating before. Their wires are all over the ground, and we never knew what sort of signal we'd have. Now everything is perfect.
DeleteIt sounds more efficient than Orange.
ReplyDeleteShame about the Musk connection though.
I'll forgive him everything for his wonderful Starlink.
DeleteWe have VOIP which is great except when the broadband goes down as we live in a mobile phone black spot.
ReplyDeleteYou would have perfect reception with Starlink.
DeleteIt would cost £70 a month which is nearly double what I currently pay. I also think installation might be an issue on a thatched cottage.
DeleteWe have a very old 'Roman Tiled' roof, and due to the very heavy weights, it just sits there and doesn't move. I think your thatch would be fine. It wouldn't cost £70; more like £35.
DeleteI checked Cro it would cost £70 a month.
DeleteI would have sent a card if I’d known 💻📞📡 XXXX
ReplyDeleteWhat; do you mean one of those paper things that used to be put through the letter box?
DeleteFunny how - as the years have passed - having a good connection to the internet has become so important. Frequently, it even gets a mention in descriptions of houses that are up for sale.
ReplyDeleteVery important these days. My two sons would be lost without all the different services. When they have any question they go direct to some AI creation, who answers perfectly and in great detail. Amazing.
DeleteYP, it's a miracle how the human race survived for thousands of years without being instantly connected.
DeleteCro, your sons would be "lost" without all the different services? Do give them [and their intelligence] some credit.
U
They are both extremely intelligent with numerous degrees between them. Being able to handle cyber information tools isn't a sign of being stupid.
DeleteSorry, Cro, you misunderstood what I was trying to convey.
DeleteU
No I didn't. I've just read it again!
DeleteGreat! Good internet service is essential these days. And half the price!
ReplyDeleteWe never use our house phone any more but still pay for it. It comes in a package with the internet ans satellite sports channels. We pay about 60 euros a month. The signal is great thank goodness. If there is a problem they give us free data for, a few weeks
Providing that the satellite doesn't crash, or wear-out, we should have perfect internet for EVER. I think it's a far better system than having wires coming into the house.
DeleteBuild a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.
ReplyDeleteThere seem to be a lot of 'Better Mousetraps' around at the moment. Maybe Musk is selling use of his satellite to allcomers. There will be many different services on offer before long, and they'll get cheaper and cheaper.
DeleteStarlink is so much better than anything else on the market today! Give credit where credit is due.
ReplyDeleteMusk and the cars are disappointing (to me). My neighbor has 3 of Musk's EV's and when they are reliable, they are outstanding. Summer high heat depletes the battery as does winter cold. They have backup BMW's so all is ok.
I like petrol cars. I'm no mechanic, but I almost understand the concept of the engines. No EV's for me!
DeleteYou don't have to worry about one or two of his satellites failing. Some time ago, the NYT had an article on just how many satellites M was sending up weekly and his future plans that basically meant he would have more than anyone/any country--absolutely littering the skies around the world. It was more than a little scary--especially as he is providing so much coverage for US government/military. And then consider what he did in Ukraine when he withheld satellite service (their only communication link) from their military in the field at one point in the war because he didn't want to upset the Russians. The Russians...who had wiped out Ukraine's previous internet service early in the war. A conundrum for us all when you consider the power held by some folks.
ReplyDeleteInternational politics is crazy at the moment, it's more about trade wars than actual conflict. I don't trust any of them.
DeleteRe: NYT article I mentioned in previous comment: "Elon Musk’s Unmatched Power in the Stars" from July 28, 2023. If you can get access, it makes an interesting and uncomfortable read.
ReplyDeleteI'm like most people, if I can have perfectly reliable internet access at a reasonable price, then I ignore all the negatives. Such is life!
DeleteI guess that unless you are into real-time gaming that somewhat greater latency of a satellite link is irrelevant for most internet use.
ReplyDeleteAnother downside to Starlink and it's competitors is that the sunlight reflections from the satellites is running ground-based astronomy, they are just too bright and intrusive.
Mine is PERFECT at the moment. Very hot here today; around 40 C in the afternoons.
