This is the season when I usually begin to bottle all my excess vegetables.
I have courgettes,
I have aubergines,
I have peppers,
but NO RIPE BLOODY TOMATOES.
I refuse to buy-in my tomatoes so I'll just have to wait. I just hope all the courgettes, aubergines, and peppers will wait too!
'Ratatouille', and its derivatives, are my main bottling activities of summer; without a good stock in storage our winter could be dire.
If I had those green tomatoes they would never get ripe. They would sliced along with a potato, mixed with a little corn meal and fried. There is nothing I like better.
ReplyDeleteWe were talking about just that last night. I shall try some today.
DeleteSame problem here Cro - what's going on with tomatoes this year - last year with all the wet and no sun I had a wonderful crop of toms.
ReplyDeleteI reckon another week, and we'll all be inundated!
DeleteYour vegies all look good even though the toms are still green.
ReplyDeleteJust looked at someone's blog and they had been using green tomatoes. I don't know if these are a special variety or just under ripe but if the latter, then maybe you can find some interesting recipe on the internet for them!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they won't be long in ripening. It's just a little annoying that all our summer guests will have gone by that time. For my Ratatouille I definitely need them to be RED.
DeleteOurs have been ripe for ages. No, just joking. Although we've been picking the smaller cherry tomatoes for about a week - love them roasted. Bigger ones just turning. Never tried frying green tomatoes - might have to experiment with that.
ReplyDeleteWe have ripe cherry toms too, but not a glut like most years.
DeleteYou'll never be Tomless whilst I am around, Cro - or Ratless.
ReplyDeleteI titled it in your honour!
DeleteI began picking my tomatoes over a week ago. However, there are many still on the vines that won't be ready for weeks. The plants are still flowering and I am sure I will have new fruit till mid-September. Good thing is that I like fried green tomatoes.
ReplyDeletePatience, Cro.
Patience is an obligation unfortunately.
Deletelovely fresh healthy veg, making my mouth water!
ReplyDeleteI just came across this recipe for when you have another glut of courgettes..

The list of ingredients told me at once that it's not really my cup of tea; sorry. Amazingly we are managing to get through all the current courgette excess. Having the house FULL helps.
DeleteTry putting a ripe banana underneath your tomato plants sometimes it kick starts them into ripening. I've had two or three ripe tomatoes. I refuse to buy any more too.
ReplyDeleteFried green tomatoes...I could eat a plateful!
ReplyDeleteI wish our tomatoes looked half as good as yours, Cro. Ours just aren't doing too well this year.
