Interior, chez Cro.

A couple of unwise people have asked to see the interior of our wee 300 year old cottage. Unfortunately I can't post a video, Blogger refuses to download (not enough space on 'one drive' I think), so here are some interior stills. Please excuse the mess; I've made no attempt to tidy.

This (above) is my 'office', where I do all my writing, etc. We rarely use the dining table at this time of year, so my use of it is reluctantly tolerated. As it becomes warmer, I shall move back into the studio.

Ancient pine Welsh settle with golly, door to studio, and old French dresser with part of my extensive collection of French antique white crockery, etc.

A few pictures, stone niche (carved and installed by me), a lovely old English Beech wooden dresser (which is much bigger than it looks, and unbelievably heavy), and Lady M's collection of exotic Gins.

And finally the fireplace with unlit wood-burner, and the original old stone sink to the left. One has to remember that this was originally the 'kitchen'; they cooked on the fire, and washed-up, etc, at the stone sink. Life was hard 300 years ago. That's Lady M's sofa well positioned next to the fire!!

All sofas and chairs are covered against Billy hair. Please don't tell me I'm a messy b*gger; I know that already.

That's it. All rather confused and cluttered, but typical of an old cottage.

  1. It all looks nice and cosy. I would have thought you would use the dining table in winter and eaten outside in summer.

    1. We tend to eat at the Kitchen table at lunch, then outdoors in the evening (if warm enough). We ate outdoors last night.

  2. Please enlighten me. What is a "settle" ? I have always assumed it was like a sofa that you ould settle down and sit on. :)

    1. It's an uncomfortable, high backed, usually pine, wooden seat, that was positioned by the side of an open fire (like ours). They were designed to prevent draughts. Ours even has a burned area on one side, showing (I presume) that it got too near the fire.

  3. Comfortable and cosy, as I would expect. Is that a kerosene heater? I haven't seen one for a long long time. I am trying to build a collection of Scotch and while I keep buying it, I can't get above one bottle.

    1. Yes, it's a little heater that I often light at 5 am on cold mornings. It smells a bit, so not used too often.

I buy just one bottle of Single Malt each year, that I consume over winter. I shall buy my next one in December.

    1. It's a 'fun house'. We've always thought of it as a playground; where we enjoy ourselves.

      Happy Passover Yael.

  6. I love it! Especially the diamond wall. I seem to remember that you painted it? The positioning of the sofa and pink chair had me a bit confused.....some moving about going on!

  13. Oh, cosy and comfy, just as I imagined. I'd not imagined Lady M. as a mother's-ruin type!

    1. She likes to have the bottles, more than she does to drink what's inside.

  16. The floor is magnificent. The settle had me confused too. I went back and looked again. Your house looks cozy. I like a house that looks as if someone has stepped out but is due back any second.

    1. The floor tiles are all hand made at a small local works. I buy all our floor and roof tiles there. They age so much better than industrial made tiles.

    2. !!!!! There is a blog post in itself! How long have they been in business? Another question that I thought to ask (after the fact) is are the stones (both in the wall and on the floor) cold during the winter, or do they hold radiant heat from the sun pouring in the windows and from the fire in the firebox?

PS, Someday when you've got a moment, I would dearly love to see the old sink. We saved the soapstone from an old sink in the basement. Lord knows where Tim has stashed it though. I'd forgotten completely about it until you mentioned your old stone sink.

  21. I like everything about it. The walls are marvelous and the fireplace is awesome. It looks like a very loved home.

Most of us with animals have coverings on our furniture for where our pets like to sit. Some people don't allow furry creatures on furniture, but I don't mind. I like them near and relaxing with me. It is calming.

  22. I like your home; it looks comfortable and relaxing. A home shouldn't look like a showroom. Better for it to be a cozy place where everyone can relax and feel at ease!
