Blackberries.

Lady M: Did you find any?

Cro: A few.

Lady M: Show me.

Cro: There you are!

Lady M: Pathetic.

Cro: I can't help it; there weren't any!

Lady M: No crumbles for you this winter m'lad.

Cro: I'll go again this afternoon.

Lady M: And make sure you come back with a good bag-full. Twelve Blackberries indeed!

(I did go out again, and came back with a reasonable supply; a winter without Blackberry and Apple Crumbles is simply unimaginable)

  1. That's what I did yesterday! I was slightly more successful. I picked 9lbs in 3 hours. Some for crumble and some for bramble jelly.
    Free food!

    1. NINE POUNDS????? That sounds like a miracle to me. I think I've found enough for about 4 crumbles. I will go hunting again, of course.

  2. Already had my blackberry and apple crumble fix last weekend. (It's very hard to say bramble crumble!)

    1. I think our crop will be OK, it was probably still a bit early, and we've had no rain.

  4. Loads in Somerset, you will be pleased to know. I have never warmed to blackberry and apple, I had too much as a boy. A good blackberry is quite nice but all to often they are rather bland. I prefer them a seasonal treat on a country walk. Now if you could turn them easily into booze I would be more interested!

    1. Soak them in Gin with a little sugar; that should do the job. I might even do some myself.

    1. It's very dry here, they just aren't growing. I need to find a new spot.

  6. It's been quite some time, but I would not be able to resist just eating them from the vine.

  7. That should keep you busy for a few days. When picking, do you eat one, save one like most of us do.

    1. No. I'm very good; every tenth one. Your method is how I pick Strawberries.

  8. As a child we lived in Camden Town. I remember one "trip" my Mother , Grandmother and I took on a bus out into the country where we walked down a country road. Fields of newly cut wheat (?) were filled with haystacks. Blackberries grew along side the fields...we picked loads and when we got home my Grandmother turned them into pie... wonderful memory from 70 years ago!

    1. We had a Crumble last night. It has such a haunting flavour. One of the better things about (almost) Autumn.

    1. The Crumble we had last night was made with just about the same amount of berries that Lady M had gathered in the afternoon; and our own Bramleys, of course.

    1. I can't hardly remember when it last rained. We were hoping for some tomorrow, but I see it's now been 'cancelled'.
