The year ahead

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Have you made yourself any promises for 2026? I can't remember those I made for 2025, but I probably failed to keep any.

As usual I've decided to try to lose a few pounds. Any loss of weight must be a relief for my painful back and hips.

Other than that I haven't really made any drastic resolutions. I was not as generous in 2025 as I would liked to have been, and I intend to be more so in 2026. My main charity is Médecins sans Frontières, but other things do crop up occasionally that need a bit of help; my beautiful old church in France was one such example last year.

Lady M intends to eat less meat, so I see that being a major change this year. I will, of course, need to follow her example, as I tend to be the cook. No; we are NOT becoming veggies!

In France I intend to return to vegetable growing in a very minor way. Kimbo goes more often than us, so I will get him to plant some Tomatoes in May maybe. Then in Summer, as soon as we arrive, I shall sow some Bok Choi. I believe they grow quite quickly so we should get an edible crop within our three months stay.

Otherwise, I suppose I'm too set in my ways for too much change. I can't think of much I'd like to change anyway! By my advanced age, if I haven't sorted out my priorities; I never will, and I'll stick to my old ways.

I WILL try not to get too upset by the Woke Folk, by Socialist policies, and all that is totally bonkers in our 21st C Britain. However, I see this aim failing!

Most importantly, I have several small jobs that I've been putting-off for years in France. They're nothing important, but they need to be finished, and I'm determined that they will be in 2026.

    1. Thank you AK. We have a spectacular Sunrise this morning, so it's already looking good!

  2. Careful, Cro. You know the saying that if you want God to laugh you'll make a plan? HA!

My mother rephrased it. Something along the line of the horse throwing up just before it reaches the apothecary.

May whatever you do or don't do in 2026 make you and Lady M happy.

    Best wishes for 2026,
    U

  3. Being more of a realist, I'm always baffled by the optimism flying around every New Year, especially these last 5 years where each year just gets worse.
Britain, Europe and the rest of the world is on shaky ground, particularly here in Britain with all it's problems caused by this traitorous Labour government.
And sadly we are being walked all over by our contemptable politicians. People are more interested in trivial tv shows, seemingly unworried by the collapse of a once great country.
But anyway Cro, Happy Optimistic New Year.

    1. You are right. The BBC is the mouthpiece of the government and they feed the people with 'celebs' on quiz shows, buying houses, and doing just about any stupid thing they can dream up. It might keep the Hoi Polloi happy, but the rest of us watch in despair as the country goes downhill. I have never understood the whole concept of 'dumbing down'.

  8. By the time we reach the ripe old age of.... whatever, we know what we should have done and what we might do in the coming year. As long as we have good health all is possible.
With Kimbo on your side I'm sure your tomatoes will flourish.
Wishing you a flourishing garden, a warm French summer and happiness all round.
This year I think I'll be going back to plant Based eating. Like you, not vegetarian but less meat. I'm ready for a change.
Thats about all. No resolutions. Just vague ideas.

    1. Semi-veggie suits us fine! But I don't want to be deprived of meat.

  9. If you do decide to become a veggie, may I suggest becoming a turnip? As for myself, I have only one resolution this year - to make it to 2027. I am pleased to have made it through the first eleven hours of 2026 so I have got off to a good start.

    1. I hate Turnips; no, I would become an Aubergine or a Red Pepper. My only goal for this year is to drive safely down to the S of France for the Summer, and back again in Autumn. I shall return being 80. Heaven help me!!!

  10. A Happy New Year to you and all your family Cro.
No, it's a waste of time making resolutions - there are so many temptations to break them.
However I do hope that you keep to your resolution to rekindle Haddock's, albeit on a smaller scale.
If I made any resolutions at all, it would be to have a jolly good clear out of all the cupboards, wardrobes and drawers harbouring "stuff" that I obviously don't need, as I've not looked at it for years! I'll probably need a skip!

    1. I mentioned Haddock's to my son yesterday and he's very willing to do a bit of digging and planting, so we should have pukka Toms for Summer.
As for de-cluttering, I should do the same but the idea is horrific.

  11. Cro, DH and I both turned 80 last summer. It's kind of a milestone... but as for NY's resolutions, we don't make any. But I would like the world to be kinder again. Wishing you and Lady M a happy healthy safe 2026!

  12. Happy New Year, Cro. Hope your Kimbo can work some magic on your tomatoes. You've tried so hard in previous years only to be disappointed. Thats my wish for you!
