I must apologise for the dreadful quality of this photo, but it was dark, and was taken through a double-glazed glass window; not ideal.
Just before Kimbo came for breakfast yesterday morning this lovely Fox turned-up, and she and Billy looked at each other through the window. I always leave the gate open for Kimbo, and she obviously took advantage. Later, when Kimbo was helping with some online stuff, she turned up again and came right inside onto our little patio, putting her nose up against the glass. Unfortunately, as soon as he told me that she was there, I turned around to look, and I just saw her tail as she left.
It looks as if Billy and her are good friends, and she (I'm sure it's a she) is simply coming to say "Hello". I might leave the gate open more often, and tempt her with a bit of sausage. I do like the idea of a friendly visiting Fox.
She is very beautiful, but any chance of some Border Foxie pups is out of the question; he's had the 'snip'.
p.s. I opened the gate again this morning (5 mins ago) just to see if she would re-appear; she did. I'd left a couple of bits of sausage for her, then when she looked through the window asking for more I went out with another bit. Unfortunately Billy saw the open door and rushed out. The Fox of course ran for cover. I shall try a more fool-proof method tomorrow.
A bit like the snake in paradise, foxes don't exactly have a good press. Sly, henhouse ... spring to mind. Still, good on Billy that he got his eye on his very own foxy lady - even if hard to get. After all, particularly if you are a dog, the joy is in the chase.

No Hens around here, and the stories of Foxes eating Cats are not true. I'm hoping that we will become friends in time.
DeleteI do love foxes, they are pretty and graceful. Now you have a visiting fox, well done. I have several tee shirts with foxes on them because I do like them.

I lost a whole Chicken House full to a Fox (about 15 Hens) one night. In France they had no Fox Hunting so they ran riot. I was told to use a 'local method' that included a fishing line and hook, and a lump of gristle. I didn't, of course!

DeleteFoxes are opportunistic eaters and will dine on most anything. They prefer fruits, proteins, cheeses and of course, should you have any handy, nice fat little mice or voles. I suspect she's so approachable because she's feeding cubs. We're careful with our dogs exposure as the local foxes as can carry mange.

ReplyDeleteMy mother used to buy tins of dog food to feed the foxes that found their way into the garden from the woods behind the house. I haven't seen a fox in a long time here - they have probably been killed off by the hunters when they run out of smaller wildlife to kill. There is a hedgehog that comes late at night when I feed the "garden" cats (supposedly feral, but mostly belonging to neighbours). I always put extra cat kibble out and hope that it finds it.
Since our burglary two years ago, we now have a camera at our house in France. The other day it caught a Cat wandering past, who was the spitting image of our old Cat Freddie. I think he may have come back to life.
DeleteFoxes are beautiful animals. I have a friend across the waters on the mainland who has a foxy friend. It comes and eats the cat food. The cats don't mind at all.

DeleteCro, I think it's wonderful that you are befriending the fox. We use our backyard as a sanctuary for feral animals and get feral cats, possums, raccoons, box turtles, etc. They cause no problem for us. We did put up a coyote roll across the greenback by the creek to keep the coyotes out... just to provide a safe place for the smaller critters. Enjoy your fox!
