Stephen Francis Lester Lowe M.B CH.B M.R.C.P (uk) F.R.C.P (can).1942-1977

I can remember the day as if it was yesterday, when I received that terrible telegram telling me of my cousin's murder in Canada.

It was on this day in 1977. I was in my kitchen in France when a yellow post office van pulled-up outside the gates. The telegram said that he had been shot; in fact he had been stabbed 15 times.

Stephen was a 'Genius'; I have no qualms in using that word. He was an exceptionably 'clever' person. His loss was a serious blow to medicine in Canada, and elsewhere.

His next door neighbour's son had broken into his house looking for drugs; he was unlucky enough to have discovered him. Stephen was a hospital doctor, there were no drugs in the house.

Stephen was my first cousin, and I still miss him. I loved him like a big brother. What a terrible waste of a life. He was someone who did only good for the world. He was just 35 when he died; he left a wife and three daughters. I wonder what happened to the little scumbag who murdered him?

p.s. The letters after his name (above) are just a selected few. His accolades were extraordinary. RIP.

  1. Very tragic that a man destined to do so much good for others in his lifetime should have been killed by a man destined to nothing of any significance.

  2. What a sad story. So young and a brilliant mind. You must often wonder what he would have achieved.

  3. Pure evil. Why do such things happen?
Also, a young family devasted by the brutal loss of their brilliant father. Very sad.
Are you in touch with the family members?

    1. Many years ago I tried to find-out what had happened to him, but it seemed that such info was not to be made public!

  5. Hi my nephew has recently found this blog. I am also related to Stephen Lowe and although I was quite young when he left the UK I do remember him. He was a lovely man. I think he initially joined a cruise ship before he settled in Canada. We are related on my mother's side who was a Lowe and was born in Oswestry before moving to Manchester with her parents. Is there a way I can contact you?

    1. Hello Jill. Gilbert Lowe (Stephen's father) must have been your uncle? Yes, Stephen met his wife Linda whilst working as a Ship's Doctor. They were a lovely family, which sadly ended in tragedy. I remember his passing every year, and of course I think of him almost daily. He was without doubt an exceptional person. I am still in contact with his daughters who live in Vancouver. Linda died quite recently. My Email is jrogercb@hotmail.co.uk
